*The earliest known interment is that of Susana Moyer who was the daughter of Samuel K. Moyer and Mary Moyer Moyer. Susana was born on May 27, 1844 and died August 25, 1850 at the tender age of only six years old. Her cause of death is presently unknown. She was interred in what is now the northeast quadrant of the cemetery in what is now designated as Lot 50, Plot 147. This interment occurred on the private land of Samuel K. Moyer prior to the parcel being deeded to the Auburn Church of God for use as a cemetery by Samuel Moyer.
********************************************************* *The second earliest known interment on the land was that of another child, John B. Fisher. He was the child of Charles K. Fisher and Phebe Berger Fisher. John was born on December 14, 1857 and died just four months and one week later on March 20, 1858. The cause of his death is presently unknown. This interment occurred in what is now the southeast quadrant of the cemetery in Lot 24, Plot 1069. ********************************************************* *The third earliest known interment on the land was that of yet another child, Mary F. Fisher. Mary was the child of William Fisher and Philopena Faust Fisher. Mary was born March 26, 1856 and died April 29, 1859, approx. three years and one month old. The cause of death of Mary is presently unknown. This interment occurred in what is now the southeast quadrant of the cemetery in Lot 35, Plot 983. ********************************************************* *The fourth earliest known interment in the land is that of still another child, Philopena F. Fisher. Philopena F. Fisher was the child of William Fisher and Philopena Faust Fisher. She also is the second known child of William and Philopena to have been interred within this parcel of land and within a a two-year span. She was born February 14, 1860 (a Valentine's Day child) and died February 11, 1861, not quite realizing her first birthday. The cause of death of Philopena is presently unknown. The interment occurred in what is now the southeast quadrant of the cemetery in Lot 35, Plot 984, where she was laid to rest beside her sister Mary. ********************************************************* *The fifth earliest known interment in the land is yet another child, Cara Augusta Jones. She was the daughter of Wellington Jones and Mary A. Moyer Jones. Cara was born January 19, 1862 and died December 22, 1864 at the approx. age of one year and eleven months. Cara's cause of death is presently unknown. The interment occurred in was is now the northeast quadrant of the cemetery in Lot 50, Plot 148. She was laid to rest beside the grave of Susana Moyer who may have been her half-sister. Susana's mother was Mary Moyer Moyer. Cara's mother is listed as Mary Moyer Jones. Whether Mary Moyer Moyer remarried to Wellington Jones to become Mary Moyer (Moyer) Jones is unclear at this time. ********************************************************* *The sixth earliest known interment is, as you may have guessed, still another child. A child, whose identity is only known as an "Infant Daughter" with the surname of Fisher, was the third child of William Fisher and Philopena Faust Fisher known to be interred within this parcel. She died October 6, 1869 with a notation that she was "one day old" but it is unclear if she was born the previous day or if she died later on the day of her birth. Her cause of death is presently unknown. The interment occurred in what is now the southeast quadrant of the cemetery in Lot 35, Plot 983, sharing the plot with her previously interred sister Mary. ********************************************************* *The seventh earliest known interment was finally an adult...but just barely. Rebecca Fisher was the daughter of Charles K. Fisher and Phebe Berger Fisher. She is also their second known child to have been interred within these grounds. She was born on March 6, 1850 and died November 10, 1869...at the "advanced" age of nineteen years and eight months. Her cause of death is presently unknown. The interment occurred in what is now the southeast quadrant of the cemetery in Lot 24, Plot 1069...sharing a plot with her previously deceased brother John B. Fisher. ********************************************************* *Jacob Mengel was interred within the cemetery in June, 1874. Jacob was the son of Adam Mengel and Elisabeth Blatt Mengel. In regards to all known interments within this cemetery, Jacob was the one who was born the earliest with his date of birth being May 5, 1802. His interment was within the southeast quadrant of the cemetery in Lot 21, Plot 156. ********************************************************* *Nellie Amelia Walborn Staller was interred within the cemetery in 1989. She holds the dubious distinction of being the eldest known interment at the ripe age of ninety-eight years, five months and seven days. Her interment was within the southwest quadrant of the cemetery in Lot 93, Plot 1291. ********************************************************* *The Auburn Church of God Cemetery, east of Cemetery Road and north of Pearson Street, contains the interment of perhaps the most historically notable individual of Auburn's heritage. Dr. Charles Edward Quail Sr. was interred within the cemetery in December, 1910. Charles was a Civil War Veteran who was wounded in action. He was also a medical doctor who had a practice in Auburn. He owned and operated a pharmacy in Auburn. He was part owner and business advisor for the Auburn Shale Brick Plant (Auburn's largest employer with the greatest longevity). He was the primary organizer and President of the Auburn Nut and Bolt Works (which later evolved into the Delaware Seamless Tube Mill - another major employer of Auburn-area residents). He served as town Burgess. He served on the Auburn School Board for thirty-five years, part of that time as Director. He was a Church Elder as well as a Trustee and Secretary for the Auburn Church of God. He was instrumental in procuring the town reservoir. He maintained a working farm outside of Auburn. He was a member of the Schuylkill County Medical Society as well as the Pennsylvania State Medical Society. He served as Schuylkill County Coroner for two terms. He was a Federal Pension Examiner. He was very active in numerous Civic, Fraternal, Veteran and Social organizations. He served as the Schuylkill County Republican Party Chairman. He also served two terms as the Republican State Senator for the 29th Senatorial District. Dr. Quail has the unfortunate distinction to have been the first person to die within the relatively new Pennsylvania State Capital Building in Harrisburg. His cause of death was listed as "angina pectoris" (chest pains caused by coronary heart disease). Charles Edward Quail Sr. was undoubtedly Auburn's most prolific resident. His interment is located in the northeast quadrant of the cemetery in Lot 49, Plot 314. ********************************************************* The Internet Website "findagrave.com" lists an estimated 692 separate interments within this cemetery. This figure is not an exact number as some earlier graves may have been unmarked, uncharted, unrecorded, or had their grave marker damaged, lost or stolen over the decades, plus a few of the entries on findagrave.com are speculative based on historical documents or records while the physical grave site is unconfirmed. |
