Korean War
June 27, 1950 - July 27, 1953
(approximate time frame for "American" involvement in the conflict)
Updated 12/18/2023
The Korean war began on June 25, 1950 when soldiers from the North Korean People’s Army crossed the boundary between the Soviet-backed North Korea pro-Western South Korea. By July, American troops had entered the war on South Korea’s behalf. After some early skirmishes across the 38th parallel, the fighting stalled and casualties mounted without significant gains. Finally, in July 1953, the Korean War came to an end. Some 5 million soldiers and civilians lost their lives. The Korean peninsula is still divided today. Approximately sixty Auburn-area residents served during the Korean War.

Berger, Charles E. - Corporal; U.S. Army; served from 05/31/1951
until 05/07/1953. Charles was born on 10/16/1929 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. He was the son of Lynn L. Berger (born 1903) and a presently unidentified mother, possibly Lynn L. Berger's wife Ruth E. Smith Berger (born 1916), who was thirteen years younger than Lynn, but that would mean that Ruth was only thirteen years of age when she gave birth to Charles and only twelve years of age when she was impregnated, which hopefully was not the case. Charles was either a brother, or step-brother, of Russell Charles Berger (depending on whether or not Ruth was his mother at thirteen years of age). Charles' civilian occupation was that of a bakery salesman. He died 02/22/1993 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Schuylkill Memorial Park cemetery, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. Berkley, Lawrence J. - Served in the U.S. Navy from circa 1950 until
circa 1953. According to a snippet found on the Internet, Lawrence "retired to Auburn, PA"...however, it does not clarify whether that meant the town of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, or a location in the rural Auburn-are like Lake Wynonah which maintains an Auburn mailing address. As a result, Lawrence's affiliation with the immediate Auburn-area are uncertain at this time. The website findagrave.com has no listing for this individual as having been interred anywhere within the United States; so either his interment site has not been documented on that website yet, or Lawrence is still living. As a result, no further information is available about Lawrence at this time. |

Boyer, Warren K. - Korean War medallion is inserted adjacent to his

Brensinger, William - U.S. Navy. Snippets off the Internet state
William is listed in the "Navy Boot Camp Book" of 1951 and includes mention of "Company 877 The Keel" and "Company 51-877 Recruit Roster", as well as indicates William was from "Auburn, PA". The website findagrave.com has no "William Brensinger" matching his criteria as having been interred anywhere within Schuylkill County, and his information is too vague to search wider parameters without resulting in dozens of potential entries. Either William Brensinger was never interred within Schuylkill County, or was interred within the county but never entered onto the findagrave.com website, or was interred anywhere else but Schuylkill County, or may still be living. Without any additional leads to follow, no further information is avail- able about this individual at this time and no grave marker image is available. |

Collins, Howard - The Auburn Korean War veterans monument has a
name of Harold Collins included in the list of Auburn-area veterans who served in that war. The website findagrave.com has listings for seventeen "Howard Collins" interments of this era within Pennsyl- vania, but none of them have any apparent ties to the immediate Auburn-area. A nationwide search of this name with no other iden- tifying information produced results well in excess of three hundred entries...too many to feasibly review each one for any type of Auburn- area affiliation. As a result, nothing further is known about this indi- vidual at this time. |

Klinger, Eugene - Listed on the Auburn Korean War Veterans' monu-
ment as having served in the military during this war. The website findagrave.com lists only eight possible interments of a "Eugene Klinger" of that era located anywhere within the United States. Out of those eight, only two are interred within Pennsylvania and neither of those individuals have any obvious affiliation with Schuylkill County, much less the Auburn-area. One of those two does list military service that may have overlapped the Korean War, but it is not definite; and he appears to have been born, raised, and died in Dauphin County, PA. Out of the remaining six interments that are out of state, one definitely list the Korean War in their military experi- ence, but has no obvious ties to Pennsylvania, much less the Auburn- area. Without further details on the individual listed on the Auburn Korean War Veterans' memorial, no further information is available about this individual. |

George Jr. not only had a small gas station located at 112-114 Market Street, but he also did automobile service and had a car wash behind the 114 Market Street structure. Kids would hang out at Lehman's place because he had video games and pool tables available. Older adults would hang out and drink coffee with George and other visitors at a small table he had near the back of his store. George offered general items for sale such as candy, canned goods, cigarettes, eggs, lottery tickets, nails, and coffee, of course. He even grew his own fresh vegetables and sold them in his shop. George offered a variety of automotive services to include "epoxy coating", repairing automobiles and selling gasoline and automotive accessories. The gasoline brands he sold included that of Esso (Standard Oil), Exxon and Phillips "P-66". He also "made" or cut keys for his customers. In addition to many other social organizations in which George Jr. had membership or involvement, he was a member of the Veterans of For- eign Wars Post 3975 located in Auburn. Malone, Warren Elgin - Marine Corps Active Reserves; served from
circa 1952 until circa 1957. Warren Elgin Malone was born on 07/17/1935 in Cadiz, Harrison County, Ohio. He was a son of Norman Malone and Olive M. Jackson Malone. He was a brother of Edward Malone, Margaret Malone Tanner and Sarah Malone. After his schooling was finished, Warren joined the U.S. Marine Corps Active Reserves from 1952 until 1957. On 12/24/1954, he married Doris J. Finnicum Malone. They had two sons: Michael A. Malone and Troy D. Malone. Warren worked in the agricultural field his entire career. He owned and operated a feed store for fifteen years along with his wife Doris. He then supervised operations for various farm feed mills in both Ohio and Pennsylvania. He finally started his own business, Shamrock Enterprises, in 1982, designing and building feed mills, retiring in 2000. In 1972, Warren an Doris purchased an 11-acre property just west of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, in South Manheim Township, Schuyl- kill County, Pennsylvania that contained the structures of the prior "Auburn Rolling Mills" and the miller's house. The mill itself was no longer in use as a functioning business. The Malones spent considerable effort, money and time in restoring the house, the mill and the property to its former glory over the next couple of decades, actually making great improvements to the resi- dence while maintaining a vintage appearance. In addition to impro- ving the appearance of the house, they added a cozy porch to the front of the structure. The house and mill are located on private property and owner permission should be clearly obtained before any visitation of the site is allowed. Warren died in Hamburg, Berks County, Pennsylvania on 04/24/2022 and was interred within the Schuylkill Memorial Park cemetery, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Myers, John Joseph - Private First Class; U.S. Army. A military medal-
lion signifying service during the Korean War is inserted next to his grave marker; however, a metal plaque honoring his military service fails to notate any service in Korea when they normally reflect any service during a conflict; as a result, John Joseph Myer's military service during the Korean War is presently unconfirmed. John was born on 06/17/1931. John died on 06/29/1993 and was interred within the St. Joseph's Church cemetery, Mount Carbon, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Ney, Edwin - Listed on the Auburn Korean War Veterans' monument.
The website findagrave.com only has a single listing for any interment of an "Edwin Ney" of this era having been interred anywhere within the United States; however, that individual was born, raised and died in Wisconsin, and has no mention of any type of military service, so it is highly doubtful that individual is the same one listed on the monu- ment. As a result, without any additional details about this veteran, no further information is available at this time. |

Noecker, Henry M. - A "Korean War" medallion is inserted adjacent
to his grave marker indicating military service during that war; yet Henry is not listed on the Auburn Korean War Veterans' memorial, nor does he have any military service mentioned on his interment listing on the website findagrave.com. As a result, Henry's military service is unconfirmed at this time. Henry was born on 05/19/1929. He married Eileen L. Rogers Noecker. He died on 08/07/1999 and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Rt. 895, West Brunswick Township, Schuyl- kill County, PA. |
Peiffer, James "Jimmy" L. - Sergeant; trumpet-player; Band;
U.S. Army. His obituary contains some conflicting information, such as stating he was an Army veteran, yet supposedly he attended the "Navy School of Music" (he was, in fact, a confirmed Army veteran) and stating that he served in the Army during the Korean War...which was from 1950 until 1953 for any American-involvement. James would have only been fourteen years old when the war started, or seventeen years old when that war ended, yet his obituary also states he graduated from the Auburn High School, Class of 1954...which would have been right on time for a seventeen year old who hadn't missed any significant time in school. James would have more likely served in Vietnam, when he would have been in his late twenties or early thirties. Additionally, at his grave site is a metal plaque honoring his military service, and it clearly indicates his service was in Vietnam. James was born on 06/23/1936 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of John Peiffer and Agnes Lehman Peiffer. He was a brother of Ethel Peiffer Miller; Gertrude Peiffer Smith; Madeline Peiffer Hanley and Robert Peiffer. James married Mary Frances Sowers Peiffer. They had a son, Timothy Peiffer. James was a Lifetime Member of the Auburn Area Historical Society and the Auburn Fire Company. James died on 05/03/2022 at the Reading Hospital, West Reading, Berks County, PA and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Rt. 895, West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, Pa. |

Reichert, George "Junie" G. Jr. - Airman First-Class; 810th
Strategic Air Command; U.S. Air Force; served from 01/09/1952 until 10/08/1955. George Jr. was born on 10/15/1933 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of George H. Reichert Sr. and Ida M. Reichert Reichert. While it is highly uncommon to identify two individuals as "Junior" and "Senior" with dissimilar names (their middle initials/names differ), it is an acceptable practice. It is unknown what, if any, relation his parents were to each other, both being "Reicherts" before they were married. George Jr. married Dolores A. Michshaw Reichert. George Jr. died on 03/20/1975 in West Brunswick Township, Schuyl- kill County, PA, as the result of his car being struck by a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Rt. 895 and Rt. 61. After countless accidents at this location, PennDOT eventually installed a traffic-light at this inter- section after a far-too-long period of time had elapsed. George was interred within the Auburn Church of God cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

He was a brother of Beverly Seiler; Jere Seiler; John Seiler; Linda Seiler; Nancy Seiler; and Shirly Seiler. George Jr. was a graduate of Auburn High School, Class of 1952. Smith, Russell - Listed on the Auburn Korean War Veterans' monu-
ment. Due to the popularity of both the first name and the surname of this veteran, and considering there is no other identifying information provided about this individual, attempting to positively confirm that the correct Russell Smith is researched is difficult. The website findagrave.com lists four "Russel (or Russell) Smith" interment of this era in Schuylkill County alone. However, one of those four individuals is a promising candidate for being the correct Russell Smith listed on the monument. Russell E. Smith was born on 04/13/1929...which would make his age in his early twenties during the Korean War. He has a military grave marker that indicates he served in the U.S. Army but it does not pro- vide a period of service or clarify whether or not he served during the Korean War. This individual also has tenuous ties to the immediate Auburn-area as his wife, Arlene J. Minnich Smith, is listed as having been born in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Russell E. Smith died on 12/06/1993 and was interred within the Schuylkill Memorial Park cemetery, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. While it is not conclusive that Russel E. Smith is the same individual listed on the Auburn monument, the probability of them being the same indi- vidual is fair. |
