World War (One)
April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918
(approximate time frame for "American" involvement in the conflict)
Updated 09/10/2023
World War (One) was the first massive conflict on a truly global scale in "modern" history. Originally known as the "Great War", the catalyst for this conflict was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in 1914. Over the next few years the war intensified. In 1917, the United States entered the battle. The war ended in 1918 but had taken a terrible toll...over nine million soldiers had died and another twenty-one million soldiers had been wounded. Several residents of the Auburn area served in the military during this conflict and, unfortunately, some of those residents were captured as Prisoners Of War (P.O.W.), were Wounded In Action (W.I.A.), or even died in service or were Killed In Action (K.I.A.). This webpage is dedicated to those individuals who were in military service during this "first" World War.

Auburn-area affiliated veterans
who served during Word War (One):
who served during Word War (One):
Auchey, Theodore Richard - Company D, 145th Regiment. Killed In
Action - Died In Service (K.I.A. - D.I.S.) "died in Belgium". Theodore was born on 12/19/1888 in Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Jonathan Auchey and Caroline Freeman Auchey. He was a brother of Alice M. Auchey Ebling; Bertha M. Auchey Walker; Charles M. Auchey; Dianna V. Auchey Emerich; Gertrude Esther Auchey Stripe; and Mary Ann Auchey Pfiefly. Theodore died on 11/01/1918 in Belgium, Europe. He was interred within the St. Paul's Church cemetery, Summer Hill Road, South Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Bartolet, James Elias - Private; Company A; 107th Machine Gun
Battalion; 28th Division. James was born on 04/03/1892. He died on 11/11/1955 and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Hamburg, Berks County, PA. |
Bartolet, Robert - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA; "Regular U.S. Army". The website findagrave.com has no listing for any Robert Bartolet of this era having been interred anywhere within the United States; as a result, no further information is available about this veteran at this time. |

Bartolett, F. L. - The Auburn Cemetery, Mill Street, Auburn, Schuyl-
kill County, PA, has a small memorial plaque located within the center of the cemetery dedicated to military veterans' service during the Civil War and World War One. An "F. L. Bartolett" is listed on this plaque as having served during World War One but does not specifically iden- tify him (or her); additionally, there does not seem to be any grave marker, or burial or church records, to confirm his or her interment within this cemetery. The website findagrave.com has a listing that this individual was Frank Lewis Bartolettt, interred within this cemetery; however, than website contributor has made numerous errors in his listings, and this would be one of those errors, as Frank Lewis Bartolett died prior to any U.S. involvement in World War (One). Presently, the identity of the "F. L. Bartolett" memorialized on this plaque is unknown. |

Bartolett, Frank Lewis - Based on a metal commemorative plaque
located in the center of the Auburn Cemetery, Mill Street, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, an "F. L. Bartolett" is listed as having been a veteran of World War (One). The website findagrave.com has a listing for Frank Lewis Bartolett as having been interred within this cemetery and implies that Frank Lewis Bartolett is the "F. L. Bartolett" who served in the military during that conflict. Unfortunately, that website contributor has made numerous errors in his past listings on the site and this presumptuous identification of the World War (One ) veteran is one of their mistakes. The Frank Lewis Bartolett whom he alleges is interred within the Auburn Cemetery was listed by the same individual posting the listing as having been born on 04/15/1862 and having died on 07/21/1913...approximately four years before America became involved in World War (One). Therefore, the Frank Lewis Bartolett listed on findagrave.com is not the same individual as the "F. L. Bartolett" honored on the veterans' memorial plaque as having served during the First World War. Additionally, there is no physical evi- dence, nor burial or church records, to confirm the supposition that Frank Lewis Bartolett was interred within this cemetery as his Certifi- cate of Death merely states "Auburn, PA"...which could have included the Auburn Church of God cemetery or the St. John's Church ceme- tery, both located adjacent to Cemetery Road within Auburn, Schuyl- kill County, PA, or even the St. Paul's Church cemetery, Summer Hill Road, South Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA, since it has an "Auburn-RD" address and is often mistakenly referred to as being located in "Auburn, PA".. As a result, we have no definite knowledge of Frank Lewis Bartolett's final resting place at this time. |

Bartolett, William Edwin - Private; 56th Pioneer Infantry.
William was born on 03/17/1891 in Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Cornelius W. Bartolett and Matilda Freeman Patchet/Patchit Schweigert Bartolett (Cornelius's second wife). He was a brother of Charles Cornelius Bartolet (Bartolett); Edna M. Bartolett Alspach and Mabel M. Bartolett Kerschner. He was a step-brother of Ellenora Patchet Reber; Emma Elizabeth Patchet Binner; John Milton Patchet, Morris A. Bartolett; Robert George Schweigert; and Robert Lewis Bartolet (Bartolett) (who lived only seven months, ten days). In 1920, William married Mamie M. Kerschner Bartolett. They had a son, George Bartolett. William died on 10/15/1973 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. Paul's Church cemetery, Summer Hill Road, South Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Basler, William - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. The website findagrave.com has thirty-two "William Basler" inter- ments of that era as having been located anywhere in the world. Only three of them are located in Pennsylvania, and none of those listed any obvious military service, nor do they list any obvious ties to Schuylkill County, much less the immediate Auburn-area. Out of the remaining twenty-nine listings, only two of them list any military service during World War (One), and neither of them list any obvious ties to Pennsyl- vania, much less the immediate Auburn-area. As a result, unless addi- tional identifying details become known about this William Basler, no further information about this veteran is available at this time. |

Baver, Clinton Mandon - Bugler; U.S. Army; served from 07/23/1918
until 01/30/1919. Clinton was born 03/10/1894 in Molino, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Frank David Baver and Catherine A. Kramer Baver. He was a brother of Allen Albert Baver; Annie May Baver (who lived only eight years, three months, two days); Charles Lewis Baver; Herbert Franklin Baver; Mary Amelia Baver (who lived only one year, five months, five days; and is listed as having died from accidental poison- ing); Raymond Theodore Baver; and Vernon David Baver. In 1966, Clinton married Florence Margaret Laubscher Baver when they were both in their early 70s. He served as a teacher and a pastor in civilian life. Clinton died in Lock Haven, Clinton County, PA, on 01/13/1976 and was interred within the Zions Red Church cemetery, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Bensinger, Charles - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, as having served in the "Regular U.S. Army". The website findagrave.com has a listing for twenty "Charles Bensing- er" interments of this era as having been located anywhere in the United States. Out of the twenty, fourteen have listed affiliation with Pennsylvania. Out of the fourteen, eight have apparent affiliations with Schuylkill County, but only one has any obvious affiliations with the immediate Auburn-area...however, that individual, who was inter- red within the Auburn Church of God, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, in 1925, was born in 1857 and would have been sixty years old at the start of America's involvement in World War (One), plus his listing contains no indication of military service, much less during that conflict. Out of the remaining nineteen total inter- ments throughout the United States, only a single one mentions mili- tary service during World War (One), but that veteran only has vague ties to Schuylkill County...he was traveling to Pottsville from Northum- berland County (where he had resided all of his life) when he was struck ill and died in the hospital there. As a result, unless additional details regarding the veteran listed on the Auburn monument are provided, no further information is available about that individual at this time. |

Binner, George - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA; S.A.T.C. George was born 03/14/1900 Pennsylvania, possibly in Auburn. He was a son of Amandon B. "A. B." Binner. Amandon married twice. The first time was to a Lizzie A. Moyer Binner, who does not appear to have much information available about her, nor was she listed on the website findagrave.com. The second time was to an Emma Elizabeth Patchet Binner. Unfortunately, presently it is uncertain as to which of these women were George's biological mother, although all of George's later-born siblings were Emma's offspring. George had the following siblings or step-siblings by Amandon and Emma: Allen Amandon Binner, Annie Binner (who only lived three years, one week, one day), Henry Herman Binner (who only lived approximately ten years, ten months); and Howard Binner. Presumably, if George wasn't actually born within Auburn, he appears to have at least been raised for part of his life in Auburn as he apprenticed under his father at an early age in Auburn to become a funeral director and undertaker no later than 1924, being only listed as the "Son" of A. B. Binner on their original funeral home invoices. The "A. B. Binner & Son" funeral home was located at the corner of Pearson Street and Second Street of Auburn, conveniently within a block of the Auburn Church of God cemetery and the St. John's Church cemetery, both located adjacent to Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Due to advertisements and invoices, it has been confirmed that the "A. B. Binner and Son" business operated from at least 1924 (if not earlier) until at least 1939, but no later than 1942 by which time the business had been renamed solely in the name of the son (George Binner) once "A. B." had retired. George married Letha Leibert Binner. In addition to initially appren- ticing under his father's business prior to owning and operating the funeral home on his own, George was also a member of Auburn's Civic Club and the Auburn's Lions Club. George's wife, Leetha, was a member of Auburn's BPW organization (Business and Professional Women's Club) as well as the Auburn Civic Club. Ironically, although the BPW was a worthy organization which empowered and recognized women's accomplishments in both Busi- ness and Professional fields, many of these accomplished women were simply identified in newspaper articles solely as the wife of their male spouse...in other words, "Mrs. George Binner", a common but unfavor- able practice that existed for many decades but has thankfully faded from occurring in recent times. Leetha had her own claim to fame in March of 1967 when she was reported in the Reading Eagle newspaper as having observed a "UFO" (Unidentified Flying Object) in the skies over Schuylkill County, PA. Although many people may have scoffed at Leetha's report, two days later a newspaper article was published which seemed to validate Leetha's claims. The article stated other individuals in the Auburn- area had also witnessed the UFO to include two employees of the Auburn Brick Company plant, a gas station owner, a bus driver and a postmistress. George died on 03/03/1964 at the Samuel G. Dixon Hospital, South Mountain, Quincy Township, Franklin County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery; Rt. 895; West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. As a point of interest, George, the Auburn funeral director, had his own funeral held within the "George Binner Funeral Home"; and his casket bearers were other local funeral home directors. |
Borkey, Howard Henry - Private; 1st Company; Battery D; 101st

He was a brother of Clarence Raymond Borkey; Edwin Charles Borkey; Fred Foster Borkey; and Ida F. Borkey (who served as a missionary for forty-four years). Howard married Earnestine Moyer Diefenderfer Borkey. They had a daughter, Betty Jane Borkey, who was stillborn on 09/08/1925. Howard died on 06/20/1939 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Auburn Church of God cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Milton died on 11/10/1979 in Schuylkill Haven, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. Paul's Church cemetery, Summer Hill Road, South Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

42nd Division. Amos was born on 02/07/1889 in Summit Station, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of John H. Bressler and Lucy Ann Luckenbill Bressler. He was a brother of Alice L. Bressler Kramer; Annie Eliza- beth Bressler Moyer; Emma Rebecca Bressler Mengle; John Theodore Bressler; Mary M. Bressler Moyer; Victor Ellsworth Bressler; and William H. Bressler. Amos died on 03/30/1951 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. Paul's Church cemetery, Summer Hill Road, South Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Brobst, Clarence Sylvester - Served as a cook, and an ambulance
driver in the U.S. Army Ambulance Service, Section 554. Clarence was born on 01/29/1895 in Pinedale, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Milton H. Brobst and Sarah E. Luckenbill Brobst. In 1921, Clarence married Sue Ebling Conerty Brobst. Clarence died on 04/17/1973 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Brown, Frank M. - R.O.T.C.; served in both World War (One) and
World War Two. He enlisted in the Army in July of 1918 as a Private; he later received a commission in the Field Artillery; on December 8, 1923 he was commissioned as First Lieutenant in the Chaplain Corps; and he was promoted to Lietenant Colonel on February 18, 1943. He was honored as the Chief Chaplain of the Peninsular Base Section for the 5th Army in Italy. Frank M. Brown was a son of Frank Luther Brown and Emma Marie Nagele Brown. Frank Luther Brown, his father, operated a pharmacy on Market Street of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Frank M. Brown was a brother of Luther Adolphus Brown (who also served in the mili- tary during World War (One) and World War Two and was taken as a Prisoner Of War (P.O.W.) during World War Two - see listing below). Frank M. Brown graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and the Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1922. He later graduated from Muhlenberg College in 1939. The website findagrave.com has an unmanageable eighty-seven list- ings for a Frank M. Brown interment of this era within the world; with none of them having occured within Schuylkill County, PA, and five of them having occurred within Pennsylvania without apparently being the correct Frank M. Brown for this veteran search. As a result, due to the popularity of both his first name and his surname, unless addition- al details surface regarding this veteran, no further information about this individual is available at this time. |

As a result, due to the popularity of both his first name and his surname, unless additional details surface regarding this veteran, no further information about this individual is available at this time. |

Brown, Luther Adolphus* - S.A.T.C.; served in World War (One)
and World War Two; achieving final rank of Colonel; U.S. Marines; served in China; was a Prisoner Of War (P.O.W.) in China from 12/08/1941 until circa 09/1945; received the Legion of Merit Medal and the Prisoner Of War medal. Luther was born on 01/03/1900 in Norristown, Montgomery County, PA. He was a son of Frank Luther Brown and Emma Marie Nagele Brown. Frank Luther Brown, his father, operated a pharmacy on Market Street of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Luther was a brother of Frank M. Brown (who also served in the military during World War (One) and World War Two - see listing above). In a rather scandalous event, Luther was named as the defendant in a civil law suit brought forth by Albert R. Steele of Annapolis, Maryland. Mr. Steele was suing Luther for the sum of $50,000 for the "alienation of affections" of Mr. Steele's wife, Helen W. Steele. Accor- ding to the allegations made by Mr. Steele, during the months of April and May, Luther caused Helen to leave Mr. Steele and deprived him of "her affection and domestic services". The results of that lawsuit are uncertain presently. Interestingly enough, Luther eventually married a woman identified on the website findagrave.com as Helen Wilson Brown. Whether this "Helen" is the same one whom Luther allegedly enticed away from Mr. Steele is unknown at this time. Luther died on 12/27/1974 in Washington D.C., District of Columbia, U.S.A. and was interred within the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia. |

He married Edna Roeder Clauser. He died on 08/10/1977 and was interred within the Schuylkill Memor- ial Park, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Floyd was born on 08/28/1898 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Irwin Dewald and Estella Augusta Meck Dewald. He was a brother of Faye Ellen Dewald Haeseler. Diehl, Henry Jacob - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Henry was born on 02/20/1892 in Reading, Berks County, PA. He was a son of Adam Diehl and Sarah "Jennie" Jane Kamp Diehl. He was a brother of Annie Edith Diehl Romberger; Clarence Benjamin Diehl; May L. Diehl (who lived only six years, nine month, three weeks, two days); and Sarah Diehl (who was born in 1903 and died presumably as a child, but no date of death is given on her grave marker). In 1917, Henry married Elizabeth Jane Werner Diehl. They had at least one child, an unnamed infant son whose date of birth and date of death are both 10/06/1921, possibly being stillborn, in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Henry died on 07/06/1958 in Reading, Berks County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery; Rt. 895; West Bruns- wick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Dissinger, Irvin - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. The website findagrave.com only has a single listing for an "Irvin Dissinger" interment of this era anywhere in the world and that is within Berks County, PA. However, that individual, and his entire extended family, only appear to have direct ties with Berks County and/or Lebanon County with no obvious ties to Schuylkill County, much less the immediate Auburn-area. Furthermore, that individual does not list any military service and would have been thirty-six years old at the start of America's involvement in World War (One). As a result, that listing is being disregarded as a potential match for the veteran listed on the Auburn monument of World War (One) veterans. Presently, no further information is available about this veteran. |

Dissinger; Mitchell C. Dissinger (who only lived approximately four- teen years, ten months, three weeks and died from "consumption"... tuberculosis); and Nora Mae Dissinger Berger. Raymond married Mildred E. Moyer Dissinger. They had a daughter, Martha E. Dissinger. Raymond died on 03/10/1988 in Temple, Berks County, PA, and was interred in the Auburn Church of God cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Archie died on 09/28/1969 in West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Zions Red Church cemetery, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Emerich, George W. - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. The website findagrave.com has only a single listing for a "George W. Emerich" interment of this era within the United States. Although that individual does not list any obvious ties to the immediate Auburn- area, he is interred within the neighboring Berks County and does have a World War (One) medallion inserted next to his grave marker; as a result, it is probable that this is the same veteran listed on the Auburn World War (One) veterans' monument. George W. Emerich was born on 09/08/1896. He married Hattie M. (MNU) Emerich. He died on 02/03/1986 and was interred within the Sinking Spring Cemetery, Sinking Spring, Berks County, PA. Faust, James Franklin - Mechanic; U.S. Army Ambulance Section

Mary Ann apparently divorced Alonze (Sr.?), because by 1902 she remarried to a Jonathan Mengel (Sr.?). Jame's father later remarried Melinda Bensinger Herring Faust in 1926. The two sepa- rations and remarriages resulted in a rather confusing and convoluted number of step-siblings for James. He was a presumed brother of Alonzo Faust (Jr.?) and Joseph Faust; and a presumed step-brother of Alice Mengel Strause; Bella (Herring?) Anderson; Bertha (Herring?) Moll; Catherine Caroline Mengel (who died at the age of only eleven years, two months, twelve days); Charles Mengel (who died at the age of only nine years, four months, eighteen days); Daniel Herring; Eddie Mengel (who died at the age of only twelve years, four months, twenty- one days); Edward Herring; Foster Herring; George Herring; Harry Herring; Irene Mengel Klahr; John Bensinger Mengel (misspelled in adjacent newspaper article) (Jr.?); Joseph Faust; Katie (Herring?) On a grevious note, six out of eight of Claude's siblings died before reaching the age of six years old. In 1920, Claude married Lydia L. Trumbo Fisher. They had a daugh- ter, Mildred M. Fisher Rogers. Claude died on 07/14/1944 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery; Rt. 895; West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

In 1917, Alonzo married Catherine "Katie" Sanaria Faust Herring. (NOTE: The website findagrave.com contributor has her erroneously listed as Katie Catherine Faust Herring based on the incorrect engrav- ing of her grave marker, unless her parents inexplicably named their child Kathryn Catherine Faust; however, her county birth record clear- ly indicates her middle name was actually Sanaria...which means a "beautiful flower"). Alonzo died on 04/29/1960 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery; Rt. 895; West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Joseph was a step- brother of Bertha Reber who was born in 1880 (Melinda is presumed to have had an out-of-wedlock child with Isaac Reber); and Katie Kramer Boyer who was born in 1876 (Melinda is presumed to have had an out-of-wedlock child with Charles Kramer). In 1935, Joseph married Sadie A. Mohl Herring. Joseph died on 04/19/1971 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA (just nineteen days after his beloved wife of thirty-five years had passed away), and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Hollenbach, William - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. The website findagrave.com has sixteen listings for a "William Hollen- bach" interment of this era within Pennsylvania. Only one of those has any obvious ties to Schuylkill County, but that individual has no listed military service nor any apparent affiliation to the immediate Auburn- area. Two other Pennsylvania listings have vague military service mentioned, but no obvious ties to Schuylkill County, much less the immediate Auburn-area. As a result, unless additional details develop about this veteran, no further information is available at this time. |

Hughes, Oswell - This Oswell Hughes is listed upon the original
Auburn Roll of Honor; yet that monument did not specify during in which, if any, conflict Oswell may have served in the military; as a result, the military record reflected here may, or may not, be for the correct "Oswell Hughes" (see explanation below). Additionally, this "Oswell Hughes" was not listed on the World War (One) monument of Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. He may have possibly been a Private in Company I, 320th Infantry, serving during World War (One) from 04/02/1918 until 06/09/1919. The website findagrave.com has forty-one listings for individuals named "Oswell Hughes" interred within the United States; however, it does contain only a single listing for any Oswell Hughes as having been interred within Pennsylvania, and that individual was also a veteran during World War (One)...the only problem with the listing is that the individual does not have any apparent ties to the Auburn-area documented. Whether or not that Oswell Hughes is the same individ- ual listed on the original Auburn Roll of Honor is uncertain; but he is being mentioned since he seems to be the most likely candidate. An "Oswell Hughes" was born on 05/06/1892 in an unlisted location. As stated above, that "Oswell Huges" was a Private in Company I, 320th Infantry, serving during World War (One) from 04/02/1918 until 06/09/1919. That Oswell Hughes died on 10/14/1942 and was interred within the Allegheny Cemetery, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA. The grave marker pictured adjacent to this listing is for this indi- vidual and may not be correct for the "Oswell Hughes" which was listed on the original Auburn Roll of Honor. |
Hummel, Harry Winfield - Corporal; 16th Company (or possibly
18th Company); 4th Development Battalion; served from 02/06/1918 until 09/20/1918. Harry was born on 01/22/1890 in Helfenstein, Eldred Township, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of John A. Hummel and Maria P. Stibitz Hummel. He was a brother of Carrie Hummel Ulmer; Florence P. Hummel Ramer; Freda M. Hummel Auman; George Franklin Hummel; Hattie Hummel Emerich; and Theresa B. Hummel Morrison. Harry moved to Auburn in 1912. He married Sallie Degler Hummel. They had twin sons: an unnamed infant who was stillborn on 05/14/1915; and his brother Winfield G. Hummel, who died just three days later on 05/17/1915. Harry was employed as an orderly at the Ashland State Hospital. Circa 1929, Harry moved to Reading, Berks County, PA, and was employed by the Community General Hospital of that city. Prior to retiring circa 1955, he was employed by Schoeffer's Bakery of Reading. He also was a member of McCloud's VFW of Reading. At some point, Harry married his second wife, Oval C. McIntosh Hummel. By this marriage, he had two step-children: Eleanor Bachman and Joseph Hadley. Harry died on 08/22/1965 in the Reading Hospital, West Reading, Berks County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Huntzinger. Eugene F. died on 02/08/1964 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Kardasen(ic), George Robert Sr. - Corporal, U.S. Army;
Wounded In Action (W.I.A.) in May, 1918 (see newspaper article on right). George Robert Kardasenic Sr. was born on 01/20/1898 in Pennsyl- vania. At some point in his early life, he apparently resided in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, according to the newspaper article featured on the right. Also, at some point in his life, presumably after his time in military service, it appears as though he "Americanized" his name by shortening it to "Kardasen". George Sr. married Mary Seventko Kardasen of New Jersey, where they then resided. They had two children: George Robert Kardasen Jr. (who served as a Corporal in the Army during World War II); and Irene M. Kardasen. George Sr. died on 08/24/1977 in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana; and was interred within the St. Michael's Church cemetery, South Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. |
Kardascovic, George R. - Corporal, U.S. Army; listed as being "slightly
wounded" (W.I.A.) in May, 1918 in the adjacent news article from the Harrisburg (PA) Telegraph newspaper dated 05/07/1918. An Internet search for any "George R. Kardascovic" with any apparent ties to Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, failed to produce any results. Addition- ally, a search of the website findagrave.com has no listing for any "George Kardascovic" of any era having ever been interred anywhere in the world. An obvious conclusion would be that the newspaper identified the veteran by the wrong name; and the obvious conclusion would be that the correct veteran would have been "George Kardas- enic"...who is listed in a newspaper article featured directly above the adjacent one, which is also dated 05/17/1918 from the Evening Public Herald newspaper, and in which George Kardasenic, of Auburn, PA, is listed as having been "wounded slightly" (instead of "slightly wounded"), also in May, 1918. As a result, the individual listed on the right, "George R. Kardascovic", is presumed to not exist, and that veteran's service as mentioned in the Harrisburg Telegraph newspaper should be disregarded. |

Kooms, William - Listed on the website findagrave.com as having
been a veteran of World War (One) based on a World War (One) veteran medallion inserted next to his grave marker; however, his date of birth and date of death are unknown at this time; he was not listed on the "original" Roll of Honor of military veterans once located within Auburn, and he is not listed on the World War (One) monument of Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, which is located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA; nor is there any current record of his military service that has been located thus far; as a result, his military service during World War (One) is uncertain at this time. Oscar died on 03/03/1967 and was interred within the Schuylkill Haven Union Cemetery, Schuylkill Haven, Schuylkill County, PA. *NOTE: The website findagrave.com listing for Marian has her maiden name listed as "Rooke Lucas", but her parents' surname was simply "Lucas" and her mother's maiden name was Boger. The website contributor who listed her maiden name as such failed to document a source of reliable and/or verifiable information for this alleged maiden name, and has made numerous mistakes within his past listings that he refuses to correct, so the name "Rooke" may, or may not, actually be affiliated with Marian in any manner. |
Long, Alvin - Private First Class; Battery A; 3rd Field Artillery; and
Battery A; 21st Field Artillery; served from 04/20/1917 until 08/02/1919. Alvin was born on 03/17/1892 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Long, Elmer - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. As a result, unless further information is provided about this veteran, no further information is available about this individual. |

Long, Henry - Henry has a World War (One) military veteran medal-
lion inserted by his grave marker. Henry would have been in his mid- fifties when World War (One) began...not impossible, but unlikely. Henry is not listed on the World War (One) monument of Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA; nor was he listed on the "original" Roll of Honor of Auburn-area affiliated veterans that was once located in Auburn. As a result, unless addition- al information becomes available to confirm his military service, Henry's veteran status as a World War (One) veteran is unconfirmed at this time. Henry was born on 08/28/1862 in South Manheim Township, Schuyl- kill County, PA. He was a son of John Long and Sarah Webber Long. He was a brother of Bernhard Long; Elijah Long; Emma Long Boyer; Jeremiah Long; and Levi Long. Henry married Mary Ann Alspach Long. Henry died on 09/28/1920 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Long, Herbert E. - Corporal; Company M; 29th Infantry; 17th Divis-
ion; served from 11/28/1915 until 10/14/1918 when he died while in military service from bronco pneumonia...possibly caused by the Spanish Flu pandemic that was prevalent across the nation that year (Killed In Action - K.I.A.). Herbert was born on 04/22/1895 in Upper Bern Township, Berks County, PA. He was a son of Preston Benjamin Long and Kate Amelia Berger Long. He was a brother of Jennie Emma Long Werner; Robert Milton Long; Sally E. Long Fritz; and Stella M. Long Rhine. Herbert died on 10/14/1918 in Rapides Parish, Louisiana (it is unclear as to whether he died in the city named Rapides Parish or within the "parish", which is similar to a county, named Rapides Parish), and was interred within the Auburn Church of God cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Long, Paul Michael - Private First Class; Company E; 4th Infantry;
Pennsylvania National Guard; and Company A; 107th Machine Gun Battalion; served from 05/14/1917 until 05/26/1919. Paul was born on 12/26/1898 in Lickdale, Lebanon County, PA. He was the son of Elias Long and Agnes Ida Kreiser Long. He was a brother or step-brother of three siblings who all died in infancy: sister Martha E. Long (who lived only one month, eighteen days); an unnamed brother who was stillborn; and an unnamed step-sister who was stillborn. In 1919, Paul married Lillie Mae Boehmer Mellon Long who married William Mellon in 1914; and married Paul's father, Elias Long, in 1919 after William Mellon had died the previous year. Paul and Lillie had a son, Aaron Elias Long, who lived only eleven years, eleven months, fifteen days. Paul died on 09/03/1936 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Long, Robert - World War (One) medallion beside grave marker.
Robert was born circa 1884. Based on his grave marker inscription, we can presume he had at least one sibling. Robert died circa 1952 and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Rt. 895, West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Long, Roy Carson - Private First Class; Company A; 108th Machine
Gun Battalion; Company E; 4th Pennsylvania Infantry; served from 04/30/1917 until 05/26/1919; gassed on 08/12/1918 and Wounded In Action (W.I.A.) on 08/23/1918. Roy Carson Long was born on 09/10/1895 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Benjamin Long and Caroline Elizabeth Rausch Long Aikman (married in 1895). He was a brother of Cyrus W. Long and Mary Helen Long Homewood; and a step- brother (by his father's first marriage to Ellen Rebecca Faust Long who died in 1894) of Alvin Long (who also served in World War One - listed above on this webpage) and Charles Edward Long. Roy married Elizabeth Agnes Kissinger Long. They had a currently unidentified son born in 1926 (who lived only two months, two days) and who is presumed to have possibly been interred in an unmarked grave site within the Auburn Cemetery, Mill Street, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Roy died on 06/27/1962 in South Lebanon Township, Lebanon County, Pennsylvania and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Rt. 895, West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. |
Long, William - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. The website findagrave.com list nine "William Long" interments of this era having been located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania; however, none of those nine individuals have any apparent ties with the Auburn-area and none of them listed any relevant military experi- ence. In an effort to expand the search, there are three-hundred twenty-one "William Long" interments of this era having been located in Pennsylvania alone...subtracting the nine in Schuylkill County, three hundred and twelve additional interments are listed for Pennsyl- vania...far too many to feasibly research individually. Unless further details emerge about this veteran, no further information is available at this time. |

Mellon, Charles - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. The website findagrave.com has a listing for twelve different "Charles Mellon" interments of this era within Pennsylvania; unfortunately, none of them have any obvious ties to Schuylkill County, much less the immediate Auburn-area, and two of them have World War (One) military experience with no means of determining which, if either, is the same veteran as listed on the Auburn monument. Unless further details become known about this veteran, no further information about this individual is available at this time. |

Mengel, Clarence Lewis - Private; Company A; 108th Machine Gun
Battalion; Company E; 4th Pennsylvania Infantry; served from 05/04/1917 until 01/17/1918; discharged due to tuberculosis. Clarence was born on 01/04/1891 in Hamburg, Berks County, PA. He was the son of Albert Francis Mengle (who died in 1908) and Rebecca Strausser Mengle Kramer (who married Albert in 1890; and then married Samuel Kramer in 1908 - the year Albert died). Clarence was a brother of Albert S. Mengel; Charles Francis Mengel; Frank Elias Mengel; Mamie Mengle; and Pearl Margaret Mengle McClay; and he was a step-brother of Abraham L. Kramer and Wilbert Clifford Kramer (who lived only three months). In an interesting note, all of the Mengel boys adopted the more "Americanized" or "modern" spelling of their parents' surname of "Mengle" while the two Mengle girls chose to retain the original spelling of the surname for their own. Clarence died on 02/13/1954 in South Heidelberg Township, Berks County, PA, and was interred within the Auburn Church of God ceme- tery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Miller, John D. - Private; Company H; 112th Infantry.
John was born on 05/10/1898 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Harry Miller and Louise Derr (Miller?). John possibly married twice: the first marriage would have been to Nora E. Caslow Miller Long in 1919. There were no children by this union. John and Nora were presumably divorced no later than 1922 when Nora married John E. Long. John's second marriage would have been to Mabel Herring as per his death certificate. John died on 08/19/1957 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Cressona Cemetery, Cressona, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Miller, Warren - Chief Warrant Officer, U.S. Navy seaman, served
during both World War (One) and World War Two from 1918 - 1938 and again from 1941 - 1945; listed on the "original" Auburn Roll of Honor but excluded from the Auburn World War (One) monument plaque; listed on the Auburn World War Two monument. Warren was born circa 1903. Warren died on 09/28/1979 and was interred somewhere within Laureldale, Berks County, PA. |
Mohl, Michael "Henry" Henry - World War (One) military veteran's
medallion inserted next to grave marker; however, Michael would have been at least fifty-seven years old when the United States became involved in World War (One). That age would have been unusually old for any military personnel to still be in active service unless that per- son was a high-ranking career soldier...and we have no indication that Michael would have been such a soldier. As a result, his inferred mili- tary service during World War One due to the cemetery medallion is questionable at best and presently unconfirmed. Michael was born on 10/06/1859 in Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Daniel O. Mohl and Rebecca Walborn Mohl. He was a brother of Charles McClellan Mohl (who lived only eight years, eight months, one day and has a cryptic notation on his findagrave.com listing of "hit by barn door"...presuming this incident was his cause of death); Cyrus S. Mohl (who lived only three months, eight days); George W. Mohl (who lived only one year, eleven months, three weeks); John Walborn Mohl; Lucian Oliver Mohl (who lived only eleven months, twenty days); and Maria Elizabeth Mohl (who lived only six months). Michael married Mary Ann Nagle Mohl. They had the following children: Clayton Daniel Mohl; Cyrus William Mohl; Edna Rebecca Mohl Bankes; Ida Irene Mohl Lessig; Katherine M. Mohl Lloyd; Lillie C. Mohl (who lived only two years, two months, twenty-nine days); Myrtle May Mohl Schwartz; and Sadie A. Mohl Herring. Interestingly, Michael's Certificate of Death lists his place of residence as being "Church Street" of Auburn, PA...which was never an officially sanctioned street within the borough, but instead a common moniker for a privately owned section of pathway. That unofficial path lead from the furthest-most eastern point of Orchard Street (where a small brick structure once referred to euphemistically as the "Healing Church" is located), across several private properties (at a rough angle), to the corner of Pearson Street and Second Street at the edge of the parking lot for St. John's Church. The public access to this alleged "street" has been unsuccessfully contested within the Auburn Borough Council meetings on more than one occasion. Michael died on 11/14/1943 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Moyer Snyder; Earl Richard Moyer; Ivy M. Moyer Rhine; Roy Edwin Moyer and William F. Moyer. Clarence married Flossie Emerich Moyer. They had two children: Kenneth Elliot Moyer and Willis E. Moyer. Clarence died on 11/28/1964 in Allentown, Lehigh County, PA, and was interred within the St. Paul's Church cemetery; Summer Hill Road; South Manheim Township; Schuylkill County, PA. |

Ney, Benjamin ("Ben" or "Benny"?) Warlin - Private; Company
M; 18th Battalion Infantry; served from 07/23/1918 until 12/14/1918. The reason for his military service of less than five months (which ended before World War (One) was finished) is unknown at this time. Benjamin was born on 12/31/1895 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. He was the son of Jeremiah ("Jem", "Jerm", or "Jere"?) Ney and Sarah ("Sallie"?) Jane Reichert Ney. They had one child: Margaret ("Maggie", "Marge", "Margie" or "Peg"?) Mae Ney Blowers. (NOTE: A direct descendant of Benjamin's is very insistent that people's common names or nicknames should be used or recognized on a website; therefore, that is the reason for all of these potential name suggestions provided within this particular post.) Benjamin died 04/18/1947 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Zions Red Church cemetery, Orwigsburg, Schuyl- kill County, PA. |

Ney Riegel, Katie Edna Ney Folk, Sarah Savilla Ney Schwenk and William Ambrose Ney. Charles was the husband of Edna Christ Ney. He died on 03/20/1936 in Berks County, Pennsylvania. Harry died on 05/24/1967 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Schuylkill Haven Union Cemetery, Schuylkill Haven, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Schucker, Harry R. - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA; U.S. Army. The website findagrave.com has only a single listing for a "Harry R. Schucker" interment of this era anywhere in the nation and that is within the Arlington National Cemetery, which would be fitting for a veteran of World War (One). Although he doesn't have any direct ties to the Auburn-area listed on his memorial, his parents are both listed as having died in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. As a result, the probability of that "Harry R. Schucker" as being the same one listed on the Auburn World War (One) memorial is high. Harry was born on 06/03/1884. He was the son of John H. Schucker (who owned and managed a hotel on Bear Creek Street, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA) and Ida Barr Schucker. He was a brother of Elmer F. Schucker (who died at the age of eleven years, ten months, fifteen days); Lyman D. Schucker (who also served in the military during World War One - see listing below); Robert H. Schucker, Tracy Michael - Listed on the World War (One) monu-
ment of Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that con- flict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuyl- kill County, PA; U.S. Army Tracy was born on 08/21/1896 in Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, PA. He was the son of John H. Schucker (who owned and managed a hotel on Bear Creek Street, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA) and Ida Barr Schucker. He was a brother of Elmer F. Schucker (who died at the age of eleven years, ten months, fifteen days); Harry R. Schucker (who also served in the military during World War One - see listing above); Lyman D. Schucker (who also served in the military during World War One - see listing above); Robert H. Schucker; and William H. Schucker (whose date of birth and date of death weren't listed but only lived approximately three- to four-years of age). Thanks to a high school biography of Tracy, we know he had red hair. Tracy had intended to join the Army after high school, and based on the Auburn military plaque, it appears as though he did so, surviving any fatality during World War (One), only to die on 04/09/1921 (less than two years after the war ended)...from a tooth infection. He was interred within the St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery, Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Snyder, Peter Joseph - World War One veteran's medallion at grave
site; however, neither the "original" Roll of Honor, nor the World War (One) monument located in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, list Peter as having been a veteran of World War (One), plus the genealogical website findagrave.com fails to list any military service by Peter; as a result, his military service, especially during World War (One), is presently unconfirmed. Peter was born on either 12/29/1892 or 12/27/1893 (discrepancy in records, although his grave marker indicates his birth was in 1893) in Mahanoy Plane, Schuylkill County, PA. Peter may have been the son of William Snyder and Margeret E. Taylor Snyder, but those details are presently unconfirmed. Peter may have been the husband of Clara Houser Snyder, but that is presently unconfirmed. Peter died on 06/07/1957 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Auburn Church of God cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Sowers, George "Georgie" - Listed on the World War (One) monu-
ment of Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that con- flict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuyl- kill County, PA; S.A.T.C. The website findagrave.com has listings for twenty-eight "George Sowers" interments of this era within Pennsylvania; unfortunately, none of them are within Schuylkill County; nor do any of those individuals list any obvious ties to Schuylkill County in their posts. Due to the popularity of both the first and last names, it is unknown which, if any, of those twenty-eight individuals might have been the "George Sowers" listed on the Auburn monument. As a result, unless further details of this veteram come to light, no further information about this individual is available. |

Staller, Jeremiah "Jere" William - Private; 153rd Depot Brigade;
U.S. Army. Jeremiah was born on 08/27/1900 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. According to the website findagrave.com, Jeremiah was married twice. One wife is listed as Edna Ruth Berk Staller (who was born in 1900), while a second wife is listed as Edna R. Becker Staller (who was born in 1901). Considering the close proximity of age, the possible confusion of maiden names, and the fact that both wives' given name and middle initial are "Edna R.", it's possible this may have been a case of mistaken identity on the part of one of their listings. At this point, the names of both wives' are neither confirmed or disputed. Jeremiah died on 01/29/1966 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Schuylkill Memorial Park, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Stoudt, Guy - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. The website findagrave.com has no listing for any "Guy Stoudt" inter- ments, of any era, as having occurred anywhere in the world. Addi- tionally, there was only a single listing for a "Guy Stout" (alternative spelling) of any era as having been interred in Pennsylvania, and that interment occurred in 1959 for a child who died in infancy. As a result, unless further details come to surface, no further information is available about the veteran listed on the Auburn monument. |

Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. The website findagrave.com only has two listings for an "Edward Webber" of this era having been interred within Pennsylvania, and neither of those individuals indicate any military service or direct ties to Schuylkill County, much less the immediate Auburn-area. Wike, William - Listed on the World War (One) monument of
Auburn-area affiliated veterans who served during that conflict, located adjacent to Rt. 895 at the eastern side of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. The website findagrave.com has a listing for six "William Wike" inter- ments of this era within Pennsylvania. None of those individuals have any obvious ties to Schuylkill County, much less the immediate Auburn-area. Only one of those six individuals lists any type of mili- tary service, and that veteran was born, raised and died in Cambria County, PA. A broader search of interments matching this criteria within the United States diclosed twenty-one matches, to include the six Pennsylvania listings already mentioned. Out of the remain- ing fifteen listings, two stood out as possible candidates for our Auburn-area World War (One) veteran, with both of them listing military service during that conflict, and both of them listing some form of affiliation to Pennsylvania. The first, less likely candidate, is William Penn Wike. His grave marker, located within the Beverly National Cemetery, Beverly, Burlington County, NJ, is inscribed with the information that he served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War (One). He was born on 12/03/1882. He married Tessie Wike, who is interred beside him. He died on 04/23/1949. Although his grave marker indicates he was from Pennsylvania, no other infor- mation is available to indicate he ever had any ties to Schuylkill County, much less the immediate Auburn-area. The second listing, a far more likely candidate to have been named on the World War (One) monument within Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, is a William B. Wike. William B. Wike's grave marker inscription informs us that not only did he enter the military service from Pennsylvania, but that he had served as a Private First Class, Company A, 108th Machine Gun Battalion during World War (One) and that he was the recipient of a Purple Heart as well as an Oak Leaf Cluster (which could indicate that he had been Wounded In Action - W.I.A. - a second time). William B. Wike was born on March 2, 1897. In 1919, William married Naomi Buffington Wike (who was both born, and eventually interred, within Schuylkill County, PA after her death in 1958). William died approximately eleven years later on 06/09/1969 and was interred within the Riverview Memorial Park cemetery, Fort Pierce, St. Lucie County, Florida. While not conclusive, this informa- tion seems to strongly support the probablity of this individual as being the same veteran who is listed on the Auburn monument. |
