Water
Updated - 07/11/2019
The Auburn area has three historically significant waterways to include the Bear Creek (after which Bear Creek Street was named), Pine Creek (also previously referred to as Bohundy Creek) and the Schuylkill River (which was part of the Schuylkill Navigation System). The Schuylkill Navigation System is commonly but erroneously referred to as "The Schuylkill Canal". In reality, the Schuylkill Navigation System was a combination of actual (natural) sections of the Schuylkill River as well as artificial (man-made) shortcuts or "canals". Another mistaken perception pertaining to the Schuylkill River is that some individuals believe "Schuylkill" is a Native American or "Indian" term, when in fact it is a Dutch term which loosely translates into "hidden stream" or "hidden river". Ironically, the common term "Schuylkill River" would translate to "hidden river river".
