The Persian Gulf War, also known as the "Gulf War", the "First Gulf War" or the "First Iraq War" was considered perhaps the first "high-tech" war in which the United States was involved. Ṣaddām Ḥussein, the leader of Iraq, and his military became increasingly aggressive toward the neighboring Kuwait. When other diplomatic options failed to resolve the issue, U.S. President George H. Bush ordered a military offensive against Iraq in 1991. On January 17, 1991, U.S. airstrikes were targeted against Iraqi forces. The successful military campaign code named "Operation Desert Storm" was launched during the Persian Gulf War. On February 24th, ground forces were committed to the battle and on February 27th, the Iraqi army was successfully driven from Kuwait approximately 100 hours after the ground battle began, making it perhaps the quickest and most decisive victory in the history of the United States.
