Circle M Ranch Speedway and Rodeo

04232018
NOTE: Due to the high quantity of pictures, this page may take a few minutes to completely open.
Picture
Auburn, Pennsylvania once featured a popular 1/4-mile oval dirt track speedway located near the western edge of the town.  Auburn resident Eddie Mates had a vision that he wanted to build "one of the finest dirt tracks in Pennsylvania" and in 1955, he did just that.  The Circle M Ranch Speedway opened featuring seating obtained from the prior Hippodrome Theatre of Pottsville, PA. featuring 2,000 seats.  When 2,500 spectators arrived on Opening Day, Eddie installed an additional 3,000 seats for the following week!  By August of that year, Eddie had installed a 200,000 watt lighting system and hosted his first night-time race at the track!   Over the next few years, the Circle M Ranch Speedway enjoyed huge commercial success until it was leased to Fred & Ken Hurley in 1958.  By the end of that year, the Circle M Ranch Speedway closed its gates for business.

The abandoned track as it appeared in 2006

Picture
The Circle M Ranch Speedway as it looked in 2006 - approximately fifty years after it had been abandoned.
Picture
The track had become a simple dirt circuit through an increasingly wooded area.
Picture
Weeds began taking over the spectator areas as the track continued to deteriorate.
Picture
The once cleared inner circle became weed-choked with trees growing in the center of it.
Picture
Deteriorating remnants of the original features were all that remained of this once highly-successful speedway.

2008 Reunion

Picture
A news article released in 2008 mentioning the first visitation to the old track in over fifty years.
Picture
Heavy equipment can be seen parked in the area that was once the speedway.
Picture
In 2008, a few of the original drivers wanted to visit the old speedway for reminiscing. A single stock car made a couple of rounds at moderate speeds to help sharpen those poignant memories.
Picture
This photograph features those individuals who visited the track during that first "reunion" of the original drivers. Each individual has been identified by name.

2009 Reunion

Picture
The following year, the drivers again asked permission of the Mates family to re-visit the track. Bonnie Mates and her family invested their time, labor and expenses to clear the inner circle prior to the event and raise an American flag in the center.
Picture
Remnants of the original infrastructure still remained, but the improvements to the track were obvious.
Picture
This photograph of the bleacher area or stands was reclaimed from the trees that had overtaken the site.
Picture
A portion of the original seating was found upon clearing the area.
Picture
During this second reunion, several additional cars and drivers attended.
Picture
Spectators began to arrive as word of the event spread.
Picture
A sign commemorating the original Circle M Ranch Speedway was erected in honor of the original track.
Picture
The race cars arriving to participate in the event showed a wide range of diversity.
Picture
Spectators were able to walk amongst the cars prior to commencing the event, taking photographs and talking to drivers.
Picture
Some of the cars that originally competed at the Circle M Ranch Speedway returned to the track once again.
Picture

By 2010, the "Circle M Ranch Speedway" sign once again graced the embankment at the site of the original track.
Picture
An increased number of spectators began to arrive as word spread of this annual impromptu reunion which had gained so much popularity.
