Vietnam
July, 1959 - April 30, 1975
(approximate time frame for "American" involvement in the conflict)
Updated 08/26/2023
The Vietnam War, also known as the Second Indochina War, was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia which lasted from November, 1955 to the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. The first U.S. military personnel were killed in South Vietnam in July, 1959 in a guerrilla attack on their living quarters near Saigon. The war was further intensified by the underlying conflict between the democratic United States which backed South Vietnam and the communist Soviet Union which backed North Vietnam. To further complicate issues, the war was highly unfavorable by some U.S. residents and anti-war protestors conflicted with pro-military supporters. Many felt the conflict did not end in a clearly decisive and/or satisfactory manner.

George was born on 12/25/1948 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA. His genealogical lineage is a little confusing but is listed as follows: George was a son of Charles James Nagle and Nora Amanda Smith Nagle Webber Shadler. (NOTE: Charles James Nagle, George's father, married three times. He was (presumably first) a husband of Mary Rudnai Nagle (a Margot (possibly "Mary"?) Rudnai was listed on the website findagrave.com as having died at the age of seventeen in Germany in 1946...Charles served in World War Two from 1942 until 1946, quite possibly in Germany for a period of that time...whether she is the same "Mary" Rudnai Nagle is uncertain but she is the only potential "Mary" Rudnai of that era listed on that website as having been interred anywhere in the world ); Nora Amanda Smith Nagle Webber Shadler (whom he married in 1948, whom was married three times herself, and from whom he was divorced no later than 1962); and Theresa Rebecca Long Long Nagle Neyer Balthaser (whom he married in 1962, whom was married four times herself, and from whom he was divorced no later than 1969). Overton, Ray "Tommy" Garland Jr. - Specialist 4; "Big Red 1" Infantry;
1st Infantry Division; U.S. Army. Wounded In Action (W.I.A.) - awarded the Purple Heart. After his military service, Ray Jr. was involved in POW/MIA organizations. PEIFFER, James "Jimmy" L. - Sergeant; trumpet-player; Band;
U.S. Army. His obituary contains some conflicting information, such as stating he was an Army veteran, yet supposedly he attended the "Navy School of Music" (he was, in fact, a confirmed Army veteran) and stating that he served in the Army during the Korean War...which was from 1950 until 1953 for any American-involvement. James would have only been fourteen years old when the war started, or seventeen years old when that war ended, yet his obituary also states he graduated from the Auburn High School, Class of 1954...which would have been right on time for a seventeen year old who hadn't missed any significant time in school. James would have more likely served in Vietnam, when he would have been in his late twenties or early thirties. Additionally, at his grave site is a metal plaque honoring his military service, and it clearly indicates his service was in Vietnam. James was born on 06/23/1936 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of John Peiffer and Agnes Lehman Peiffer. He was a brother of Ethel Peiffer Miller; Gertrude Peiffer Smith; Madeline Peiffer Hanley and Robert Peiffer. James married Mary Frances Sowers Peiffer. They had a son, Timothy Peiffer. James was a Lifetime Member of the Auburn Area Historical Society and the Auburn Fire Company. Pflueger, William "Bill" J. Jr. - U.S. Air Force; served in Thailand;
served from circa late 1960s until circa early 1970s. William Jr. was born on 12/04/1948 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of William J. Pflueger Sr. and Cecelia B. Yarish Pflueger. He was a brother of Carolyn C. Pflueger Carvalho and James Edward Pflueger (who died in infancy). William Jr. was a Blue Moun- tain High School graduate, Class of 1966. Reedy" interments of the Vietnam War era as having been interred anywhere within the United States; however, it is uncertain which one is the Preston C. James' obituary reads in part "JAMES CLYDE VAUGHN, 65, of Auburn, PA..." and "he was a lifelong South Jersey resident before recently retiring to Schuylkill Co., PA."
