Personnel
Updated 10/16/2023
Attached you will find a downloadable "Word" document file containing a list of ANY and ALL military personnel who was, or is, somehow affiliated with the Auburn area at some point during their life; as well as individual listings of any person who is alleged or presumed to have been Auburn-area affiliated veteran. Additionally, we have added a "Can you identify the veteran(s)?" section at the bottom of th page that features several pictures of veterans who are possibly affiliated with the Auburn-area but whose identities are unknown currently. While the individual may or may not have been a resident at the time of the period of their military service, the Auburn Area Historical Society believes that every individual listed should be recognized for their service to their country. This list is constantly evolving as additional information becomes available. If you know of anyone who fits these qualifications but is not yet listed, or if you have any additions or corrections to make to the current list, please submit the information using the "Visitor Input" button below in order that the list can be updated accordingly.
NOTE: If you have any historic information and/or pictures that are relevant to this webpage topic, please share it with us by submitting the material using the "Visitors Input" button below. Thank you!

Neal was born on 06/25/1934. Neal died on 08/23/2013 and was interred within the Zion Evangelical Church cemetery, Rock, Schuylkill County, PA. Curiously, a metal memorial plaque honoring his military service is located behind his grave marker and at an obvious angle to the stone base. |

Brensinger, Earl E. - The original Auburn Roll of Honor has Earl
included in its "Roll"; yet does not specify during which, if any, conflict he may have served in the military; and since the "Roll" includes entries for more than one conflict, presently Earl is listed under this heading of personnel until further information can be obtained. Based on his age and date of death, Earl could have feasibly served during World War Two, the Korean War, or even the start of the Vietnam War. Earl was born on 12/01/1927. He was a son of James Monroe Bren- singer and Lucy Ann Kerschner Brensinger. He was a brother of Ada A. Brensinger Riegel; Alice Mae Brensinger Wenrich; Carl James Brensinger and Grace E. Brensinger. Earl died on 10/29/1968 and was interred within the St. Paul's Church cemetery, Summer Hill Road, South Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Burke, Robert - The original Auburn Roll of Honor has Robert
included in its "Roll"; yet does not specify during which, if any, conflict he may have served in the military; and since the "Roll" includes entries for more than one conflict, presently Robert is listed under this heading of personnel until further information can be obtained. The website findagrave.com has only two listings for any potential matches of this individual as having been interred anywhere within Schuylkill County, PA. The first, which is a more exact name match, is a Robert W. (probably "William" after his father's first name) Burke who both died, and was interred, within Tremont, Schuylkill County, PA. However, that individual does not seem to have any apparent ties to Auburn and therefore would not normally have been listed on the "Auburn Roll of Honor" of military veterans affiliated with this area. The second, and perhaps more likely match, is an individual with a slightly different surname spelling of Robert William Burkey Sr. Robert William Burkey Sr. was born on 02/16/1915 in nearby Orwigs- burg, Schuylkill County, PA (one point in favor of this individual). Most records show his parents as William H. Burkey and Jennie M. Newhard. However, Orwigsburg Borough birth records suggest his parents were William Miller and Pearl Newhard (although it is obviously uncertain as to where he would have gotten the surname of "Burkey" from that union). Robert married Barbara G. Staller Burkey (a native of Auburn, Schuyl- kill County, PA...another point in this Robert's favor). They had two children: Keith William Burkey, who tragically died at the age of sixteen years old due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Port Clinton, Schuylkill County, PA; and Robert William Burkey Jr., who tragically died at the age of eight years old when he drowned while swimming in the Schuylkill River adjacent to Auburn...where the family had resided at that time. The Burkey family's residency in Auburn is a third point in the favor of this Robert being the same individual as the veteran listed on the Auburn Roll of Honor. Robert William Burkey Sr. died on 01/15/1993 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA. He is presumed to have been interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA because that is the confirmed place of interment of his wife and both children; however, no grave marker is present for Robert William Burkey Sr. at this site; nor do any burial or church records exist to confirm his interment within this cemetery. The family's interment within Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA is a fourth point in favor of this being the correct Robert Burke(y) who was listed on the Auburn Roll of Honor. However, there is no mention of any military service on the website findagrave.com for either Roberts listed as having been inter- red within Schuylkill County. Whether or not this is the same indivi- dual listed on the Auburn Roll of Honor memorializing military service is uncertain at this time. |

Chandler, James B. - U.S. Army.
James was born on 07/17/1938 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He was the son of Margaret Ford Chandler. James married Ruth L. Rohe Chandler in October of 1960. They had two children: Lynda M. Chandler Fell and Richard D. Chandler. James and Ruth owned and operated Chandler Drywall for 30+ years. According to his obituary, James enjoyed spending time and relaxing in Auburn, PA, his little "Slice of Heaven". (It is unclear whether this reference is to the Auburn Borough or to Lake Wynonah-Auburn R.D.; as a result, James isn't confirmed as an Auburn-area affiliated veteran as of this time.) James died on 01/31/2018 at the Lehigh Valley Health Network, Salisbury Township, Lehigh County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Lutheran Church cemetery, Spinnerstown, Bucks County, PA. |

Dissinger, John G. Jr. - John was memorialized on a veterans'
commemorative plaque located in the center of the Auburn Cemetery, Mill Street, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, under a heading of "P.N.G." (presumably an abbreviation for the Pennsylvania National Guard which was established in 1747). John was born on 11/06/1885 in Cressona, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of John G. Dissinger Sr. and Elizabeth "Lizzie" G. Hummel Dissinger. He was a brother of Annie R. Dissinger Kerschner; Mitchell C. Dissinger (who died at the age of fifteen years from "consumption"; also known as tuberculosis); Nora Mae Dissinger Berger; and Ray- mond Milton Dissinger. John was employed as a "fireman" for the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad. He was killed at the age of twenty-three while working for the railroad, but strangely, there are two totally different accounts of how he met his death. His death certificate states he was "killed on P + R Road by falling from tank" and then being struck by an express train on the adjacent track; yet his obituary has a detailed account by the engineer who witnessed the accident, stating that John had step- ped off the train onto the tracks, not realizing another train was rapid- ly approaching him from behind. The engineer stated he yelled to John to warn him, but due to the noise of steam being "blown off", John did not hear him and was struck by the train, estimated to be traveling about 60 miles per hour. John died sometime in May, 1911 in Reading, Berks County, PA. His grave marker is engraved with the date of May 26th; his death notice implies it was May 27th; and his Certificate of Death lists the date of his demise as May 28th. He was interred within the "Lower Cemetery" of Auburn, which is officially the Auburn Cemetery, Mill Street, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Donton, Albert Israel - Listed on the website findagrave.com as a
"Private" but no other military service information is available at this time. Albert was born on 07/04/1899 in Suedberg, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Charles Richard Donton and Anna (or Emma?) Reed Donton (misspelled "Denton" in her newspaper death notice). Albert was a brother of Calvin James Donton; Charles I. Donton; and Harry Donton; and he was a step-brother, through his father's second marriage, of an impressive twelve step-siblings to include: Clayton Robert Donton; Daniel Uriah Donton; Elmer Jessiah Donton; Eva Donton Reber; Evelyn Donton Reber; John Edward Donton; Lester W. Donton; Levi Richard Donton; Milton L. Donton; Verna Donton Botham; William Donton (who lived only approximately eleven months); and Wilma Margaret Donton Eckert. Additionally, his father's newspaper death notice mentioned that Charles (his father) had seventeen children survive him...and mentions a "Frank" Donton, but it is uncertain whether this person was Albert's brother or step- brother. (NOTE: This "Frank Donton" is definitely not the same Frank Donton listed immediately below this listing). As a point of interest, not only were Albert's sisters, Eva and Evelyn twins, but they were born on Christmas Day, 1932...and they married twin brothers, Merlin George Reber and Melvin "Pappy" I. Reber, respectively. Unfortu- nately, neither couple are listed on the website findagrave.com as having produced any children from their marriages, so it is unknown as to whether or not the twin-gene would have persisted in subsequent generations. Albert married Jennie Koons Donton but they were divorced by the date of his death. His Certificate of Death lists his occupation merely as "laborer". Albert died of a cerebral hemorrhage on 10/15/1956 in the Pottsville Hospital, Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Rt. 895, West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. There presently is no image of his grave marker available on the website findagrave.com. |

Donton, Frank John - The original Auburn Roll of Honor has Frank
included in its "Roll"; yet does not specify during which, if any, conflict he may have served in the military; and since the "Roll" includes en- tries for more than one conflict, presently Frank is listed under this heading of personnel until further information can be obtained. Frank was born on 09/09/1949 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Levi R. Donton Sr. and Catherine Mocovcak Donton. He was a brother of Anna Donton Jenkins; Betty Donton Henry; Boyd Donton; Catherine Donton Lutz; Levi R. Donton Jr.; Mary Donton; and Paul Donton. Frank John Donton had a son, Frank L. Donton, and two apparent step-children, Corey J. Rausch and Crystal Rausch. The name of Frank John Donton's wife is presently unavailable. Frank died on 03/03/2016 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was cremated with his ashes being retained; as a result, no image of a grave marker is available for Frank. |

Emery, Wellington Burnett - Technical Sergeant; U.S. Air Force.
Wellington was born on 07/27/1919 in Rumson, Monmouth County, New Jersey. He was the son of Wellington Wolcott Emery Sr. and Alphraetta "Etta" Burnett Emery. He was a brother of Blanche Audrey Emery Longstreet; Charles Gerrard Emery; Nancy Yolanda Emery Dickinson; Olive Alphaetta Emery Tilton; and Wellington Wolcott Emery Jr. (Based on Wellington's mother's first name of Alphraetta, and his sister's middle name of Alphaetta, the probability that one of the two names is misspelled is highly likely). Wellington died on 05/12/1999 in Germany and was interred within the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, VA. The website findagrave.com contains no image of his grave marker. |

Fahl, Charles Edward - Charles' supposed military service is rather
unlikely because he was born after the Civil War ended, and died prior to the commencement of the Spanish-American War, and there were no other major conflicts requiring a military presence during the time span of his life nor any military records known to exist that support his military service. Charles was born on 09/10/1875 in West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of James William Fahl and Amanda Dietrich Fahl. He was a brother of George Washington Fahl; John Howard Fahl; Joshua W. Fahl; Lewis Fahl (who died at thirteen years of age); Maurice A. Fahl (listed below) and William H. Fahl. Charles died on 11/27/1896 in West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Fahl, Maurice A. - Maurice's supposed military service is unlikely
because he was born after the Civil War ended, and died prior to the commencement of the Spanish-American War, and there were no other major conflicts requiring a military presence during the time span of his life nor any military records known to exist that support his military service. Maurice was born on 07/08/1865 in West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of James William Fahl and Amanda Dietrich Fahl. He was a brother of Charles Edward Fahl (listed above); George Washington Fahl; John Howard Fahl; Joshua W. Fahl; Lewis Fahl (who died at thirteen years of age); and William H. Fahl. Maurice married Irene Ladner Fahl Gressang in 1892...the year that he died at the age of twenty-seven years old. Maurice died on 12/06/1892 and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Frey, Charles L. - Charles was born circa 1928 and died circa 2004. The
website findagrave.com has no listing for a Charles L. Frey who was born in 1928 died in 2004 as having been interred anywhere within the United States. The same website does have a listing for a Charles L. Frey who may fit the criteria. A "Charles L. Frey" was born on May 14, 1927 in an unlisted location. He married Ada M. Heim Frey...she is listed as having been born in Landingville, Schuylkill County, PA, and having died in Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County, PA. They had two sons: Randy Frey and William Frey. Charles died on 07/21/2003 at an unlisted location; both he and his wife were interred within the Schuylkill Memorial Park cemetery, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. There is no men- tion of any military service for Charles on that website; and the dates of birth and death are both one year earlier than the estimates given previously, but they do both have relatively close ties to the Auburn- area; whether or not this is the correct Charles L. Frey; and whether or not his qualifies for both military service and being within the desig- nated "Auburn-area" to be considered an Auburn-area affiliated veteran, is currently undetermined. No image of a grave marker was posted on that website and none is currently available. |

Graybill, Todd L. - Private First Class; Company B; 519th Military
Intelligence Battalion; 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade; Fort Bragg; North Carolina; Military Occupational Specialty: Counter- intelligence; trained in Fixed, Foot and Vehicular Surveillance, as well as Document, Personnel and Physical Security; recommended for an R.O.T.C. scholarship; served from 03/12/1981 until 12/03/1982; honorable discharge; Army Service Ribbon; grenade qualification badge; M16 rifle qualification badge; Ithica .45 pistol qualification badge; Army Achievement Citation. Todd was born on 03/02/1961 in rural Snyder County, PA. He is the son of Guy Oldt Graybill and Nancy Lorraine Yerger Graybill. He is a brother of Greta L. Graybill Kerstetter and Sonia L. Graybill. Todd's first employment was catching chickens overnight at a local poulterer (chicken farmer) whenever there was a need. As a teen, his hobbies included enthusiastic reading of books; buying and reselling of antiques and collectibles; projectile point "hunting" (searching for Native American "arrowheads" and artifacts); antique or old bottle "hunting"; and spelunking (exploring of non-commerical caves). As a teenager, he witnessed two juvenile offenders breaking into, and stealing from, parked cars; he personally apprehended them in a citizen arrest, and then physically escorted the offenders on foot to the county jailhouse located a few blocks from the scene of the apprehension, where the authorities then took custody of the two juvenile delinquents and criminally charged them with the act. After his stint in Military Counterintelligence, Todd attended the Mont Alto Campus of Penn State University, majoring in Business Adminis- tration. During his college years, he also was employed by the college as a Campus Safety and Security Officer during his first year at the Mont Alto campus; an employment which gave him the opportunity to personally solve an open rape investigation, as well as solve an ongoing n investigation into a local vehicle burglarizing ring. He further worked for the campus as a dormitory Resident Assistant during his second year at the Mont Alto campus, mentoring and providing assistance to numerous other college students. Among other employment after college, Todd worked as an under- cover retail detective and/or Loss Prevention Manager for several retailers to include Kmart, Rite Aid and Walmart. During his twenty-three years employment in that field, he apprehended over 1,100 shoplifters, investigated and prosecuted fifty-two dishonest employees, and won awards and a commendation plaque for his work. He has worked closely with dozens of police agencies throughout eastern Pennsylvania and into portions of New Jersey; and has testified in several dozen criminal prosecution cases at the local and state level. In the summer of 1999, Todd relocated to one of the earliest houses built in the town of Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Intrigued by the age of his home, he began investigating its history, only to be intro- duced to such Auburn-area historians as Charlie Bohr, Kermit Mengel and Winfield "Tubby" Weston, who further fueled his interest in the history of the town. Those three individuals encouraged him to write a book about the interesting one-and-one-half century history of Auburn. Todd began researching the history of the town, and in the summer of 2007, the town of Auburn celebrated its sesquicentennial (150th Anniversary) of its establishment. During this town-wide celebration, Todd realized that many individuals had an interest in the history of Auburn, so in October of that year, Todd founded and became the Chairperson of the Auburn Area Historical Society...a position which he proudly maintained for the next twelve-plus years. After a few years of the AAHS being established, Todd and co-Chairperson Daniel Kerschner remodeled and created a professional grade display room for the hundreds of items of historic memorabilia donated to the historical society; and Todd created and still manages the AAHS professional-grade website which contains over 200 separate web- pages, approximately a couple of thousand pictures, and several thousand fascinating facts about Auburn's history, which can be found at www.auburnareahistoricalsociety.weebly.com (the site you are now presumably visiting). In addition to his major involvement in the establishment and growth of the town's historical society, Todd also served on the board of the St. John's Church; was a member of the Auburn Memorial Park Association; was an appointee to the Auburn Municipal Authority; and was a twice-elected member of the Auburn Borough Council. Todd relocated from Auburn to Snyder County, Pennsylvania, in 2020 where he currently resides, and continues to maintain and up-date the aforementioned website while keeping in contact with certain Auburn Area Historical Society members and friends. |

Hurst, James Franklin - James has a "Veterans of Foreign Wars"
medallion inserted next to his grave marker; yet it does not specify in which, if any, conflict he was involved. Based on his age and lifespan, he could have potentially participated in either the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, or both, or neither. Until further information is available, James' military experience is unconfirmed at this time. James Franklin Hurst was born on 09/15/1872 in Reading, Berks County, PA. James Franklin Hurst married Caroline "Carrie" Louisa Petry Hurst Brophy in 1891. Caroline's grave marker is incorrectly engraved with a maiden name of "Hurst" rather than Petry and does not correctly reflect her marriage to James. They had the following children: Helen Evelyn Hurst Lewis; Iva M. Hurst Soval; and James Alfred Hurst. James Franklin Hurst died on 05/13/1906 in Philadelphia, Philadel- phia County, PA, and was interred within the Auburn Church of God cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Kramer, Henrietta E. - Henrietta was born circa 1907 in Allentown,
Lehigh County, PA.. She was a daughter of John H. Kramer and Emma D. Fosselman Kramer. She was a sister of Albert C. Kramer and Clara M. Kramer Kuhlmeier. She worked as a machine operator at the Western Electric Company, Allentown Works, Allentown, PA, for twenty years before retiring in 1970. Presumably after her retire- ment, she relocated to her address at "Auburn R.2". Henrietta died on 04/13/1983 in the Reading Hospital, Reading, Berks County, PA, and was interred within the Cedar Hill Memorial Park cemetery, Allentown, Lehigh County, PA. Presently, there is no known record of her alleged military service available and it is uncertain as to whether or not her prior address of "Auburn R.2" is within the limits set of being considered an "Auburn-area affiliated" veteran. |
Kramer, Rebecca - The website findagrave.com has a listing of nine
"Rebecca Kramer"s as having been interred within Schuylkill County; three of which are interred within Auburn itself. Out of the nine, three of them can be immediately disregarded since they died at too young of an age to have served in the military, one of which is one of the Auburn interments. Out of the remaining six, none of them indicate any military service. As a result, it cannot be determined which of these six individuals, if any of them, are the "Rebecca Kramer" that was alleged to have served in the military during an unspecified time period. Additionally, the Rebecca Kramer whose military service is unknown currently may still be living. No further information is available at this time about this individual. |

A photograph of his grave marker, which he shares with his wife, is posted on the website findagrave.com; however, Leroy's date of death was not yet engraved upon the marker when the photo was taken. |
Lindermuth, Horace Daniel - Horace has a veteran's medallion
inserted next to his grave marker; yet a very detailed biography about Horace written in the "Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania; genealogy- family history-biography; containing historical sketches of old families and of representative and prominent citizens, past and present, J. H. Beers, Chicago, 1916, Volume II, Page 1126" fails to document any type of military service by Horace even though he would have been in his late thirties when the biography was written. As a result, Horace's implied military service is questionable at this time. Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania; genealogy--family history-- biography; containing historical sketches of old families and of representative and prominent citizens, past and present, J. H. Beers, Chicago, 1916, Volume II, Page 1126 (edited and/or condensed for this webpage): "Horace D. Lindermuth was born at Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA on 09/11/1877, and has resided there continuously. He is a son of Joseph H. A. Lindemuth and Elizabeth "Eliza" Wingert Lindemuth. He is a brother of Alice V. Lindemuth Fahl; Annie L. Lindemuth (who died at the approximate age of only ten months); Eddie J. Lindemuth (who died at the approximate age of three years, seven months); Emma G. Lindemuth (who died at the approximate age of three years, ten months); John H. Lindemuth (who died at the approximate age of four years, eleven months); Leon C. Lindemuth (who died at the approximate age of two years, eleven months); and Mary Elizabeth Lindemuth Sellers. Horace has always taken an interest in local affairs and is a member of several secret organizations. He was elected a member of the borough school board at the age of twenty-one, and has been a mem- ber since, serving as secretary during this time. For sixteen years, Mr. Lindermuth had charge of the office work of the Delaware Seamless Tube Company, at Auburn. In 1902, Horace married Minnie Mary Mengel Lindermuth. They had two children: Dorothy M. Lindermuth Yocum and Rose Elizabeth Lindermuth. In 1912, he was elected one of the national delegates from Schuylkill County to the Republican convention at Chicago, having announced himself as a supporter of Colonel Roosevelt, he and his colleague, T. R. Edwards, of Shenandoah, decisively defeating the Taft candidates after a spirited contest. He followed the wishes of Colonel Roosevelt throughout the memorable convention, and joined with the Roosevelt forces in organizing the Progressive party at Chicago in August, 1912, and in making him their candidate for president. He became an ardent supporter of the new party and its principles, and his work in its interest was publicly recognized in a speech by Colonel Roosevelt on a visit to Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, on a tour of the State, in October, 1914. In August, 1913, Horace accepted a position as a traveling auditor under the Auditor General of the State of Pennsylvania. He has always been an ardent Republican in politics, having been an active worker for the party in this section of the county even prior to attaining voting age." Horace died on 10/19/1932 in Butler Township, Schuylkill County, PA and was interred within the Auburn Church of God cemetery, Ceme- tery Road, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Miller, James L. - Lieutenant Colonel.
The website findagrave.com has a single listing for a "James L. Miller" who was interred within Schuylkill County, PA; however, there is no mention of military service on that listing and there is no picture of a grave marker provided to determine whether that individual even has a military medallion inserted next to their grave marker to indicate prior military service. Based on the popularity of both the first and last name of Lieutenant Colonel James L. Miller, there is a very high probability that the findagrave.com listing may be for a different indi- vidual. However, in the unlikely case that this is the same individual, his information is provided below. A "James L. Miller" is listed on the website findagrave.com as having been born on 02/21/1958 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA. He was the son of John C. Miller and Lucille Dorothy Ann Shappell Miller; and a step-son of Carolyn (MNU) Miller. He was a brother of Bonnie L. Miller; Nancy Miller Robert Bruton (Nancy's full name may be incorrect as it was listed in an unusual manner on the website); and William John Miller. This "James L. Miller" died on 12/28/2010 in Carroll, Fairfield County, Ohio and was interred within the Schuylkill Memorial Park cemetery, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. Whether or not this is the same individual as "Lieutenant Colonel James L. Miller" is uncertain at this time. |

Moyer, Dory A. - Private. The original Auburn Roll of Honor has
Dory included in its "Roll"; yet does not specify during which, if any, conflict he may have served in the military; and since the "Roll" includes entries for more than one conflict, presently Dory is listed under this heading of personnel until further information can be obtained. Based on his date of birth and date of death, Dory feasibly could have served in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine- American War, or even World War (One). Dory was born on 02/21/1877 in West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Conrad Moyer and Emma Rinck Moyer. He was a brother of Agnes Moyer and Irwin Moyer. Moyer, William H. (1921-1959) - No record of his military service
has been located presently. Possibly he was confused with a William H. Moyer from Auburn who was born approximately forty-four years earlier on 10/09/1877 and who had served in the Philippine-American War; or possibly with a Wilson H. Moyer of Auburn who was born approximately five years earlier on 10/09/1916 and served in the mili- tary during World War Two. However, in case this William H. Moyer did serve in the military, his information is listed below. This Willaim H. Moyer was born on 09/02/1921 in Pottsville, Schuyl- kill County, PA. He was a son of Norman Moyer (Sr.?) and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Heiser Moyer. He was a brother of Margaret E. Moyer Smith; (the first) Norman Moyer (Jr.?)(1922-1922; who lived approximately two months), (the second) Norman Moyer (Jr.?)(1928-1929; who lived only three months, three days), Paul Francis Moyer (who lived only four months, three days). This William H. Moyer died on 02/06/1959 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the "Lower Cemetery" of Auburn, officially known as the Auburn Cemetery, Mill Street, Auburn, Schuyl- kill County, PA. |

Nye, Kenneth L. - Master Sergeant; U.S. Army; served from circa 1946
until circa 1960. Kenneth was born on 06/05/1930 in Hamburg, Berks County, PA. He was a son of Earl O. Nye and Esther M. Carboni. He was a brother of Curtis Nye; Donna (Kocher or Nye?) Welder; and Shirley M. (Kocher or Nye?) Hill; and a step-brother of Edwin Kocher; Homer Kocher Jr.; Joe Kocher; Mary Kocher (and Thomas Stout?). (Kenneth's obituary didn't clarify some of the relationships exactly). Kenneth was listed as having married Charlotte M. Nye according to his obituary; however, his children are listed as having been born by his wife Marilyn Ann Smeltz Ney. The website findagrave.com was not clear as to which wife was from Kenneth's first marriage and which was from his second marriage; however, it is presumed that the obituary would have listed at least his current (second) wife when he passed, which would imply that Marilyn was his first wife with whom he had children and Charlotte was his second wife. Kenneth was a father of David R. Nye and Thomas E. Nye by his wife Marilyn; as well as a step-father of Beverly D. Betz Fick and Robert T. Betz, presumably by his second wife Charlotte. Kenneth was also a father of unnamed twin girls who were prematurely birthed on 03/30/1951; neither one survived. In addition to his military service, Kenneth was employed as a super- visor for the Department of Army Civilian for 25 years, retiring in 1993. Kenneth also was involved in Boy Scout Troop 222, where he was awarded "The Order of the Arrow". Kenneth died on 03/26/2014 within the Reading Hospital and Medi- cal Center, Reading, Berks County, PA, and was interred within the Berks County Memorial Gardens, Fleetwood, Berks County, Pennsyl- vania. |

Peiffer, Harry Mahlon (Jr.?)- Harry M. Peiffer (Jr.?) has a generic
"Veterans of Foreign Wars" medallion inserted next to his grave marker indicating military service; yet there is no indication of him having served in World War (One)...the only conflict in which he could have served based on his age and premature death at the age of twenty-four years, three months and eleven days, possibly from the Spanish-Flu epidemic that was prevalent in Auburn (and across the nation) when he died. Nor is Harry memorialized on the World War (One) monument of Auburn-area veterans located at the east end of the town of Auburn. Finally, no information could be readily discov- ered during an Internet search for his military service. As a result, his implied military service is unconfirmed at this time. Harry Mahlon Peiffer (Jr.?) was born on 07/08/1894 in South Man- heim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Harry Peiffer (Sr.?) and Clara Zimmerman Peiffer. He was a brother of John Peiffer and possibly an unidentified sister (see photograph at right). Harry (Jr.?) died on 10/19/1918 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Reber, George Milton Jr. - Lance Corporal; U.S. Marine Corps. A
World War Two medallion was inserted next to his grave marker; yet George Jr. would have only been eight years old when that conflict ended. Additionally, the metal commemorative plaque honoring his military service does not denote any involvement during World War Two, which normally would be reflected upon this plaque; as a result, any implication George Jr. served during that conflict should be disre- garded and the grave marker medallion should be removed from the site. George Jr. was a member of the Auburn VFW Staller-Luckenbill Post 3975. George Jr. was born on 01/25/1937 on his family's farm in Auburn (R.D.), Schuylkill County, PA. He was the son of George Milton Reber Sr. and Hattie D. Bartolet Reber. He was a brother of Ellen Reber Pietsch and Esther Reber Eichert. George Jr. married Joyce C. Rubright Reber circa 1974. They had the following children: David J. Reber; Gregory George Reber (who also served in the Marines and was killed while in military service when the Boeing Vertol Ch-46E Sea Knight in which he was a passenger crashed during a training mission); and Kevin C. Reber. Not only was George Jr. a lifelong farmer, but he was formerly em- ployed by Dana Steel Corporation as a jockey truck driver. George Jr. died on 07/21/2014 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. Paul's Church cemetery, Summer Hill Road, South Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Reber (who died at the age of seventeen years, nine months, nine days; possibly of the Spanish Flu which was prevalent in Auburn, and across the nation, at that time); and Ellen May Reber Fertig. Joseph Monroe Reber married Isabelle Schaller Reber. They had at least three children: Joseph Elias Reber, Lucille Reber and Patricia M. Reber Phillips. Joseph Monroe Reber died on 01/13/1986 and was interred within the St. Paul's Church cemetery, Summer Hill Road, South Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

Schweigert, Marlin - The website findagrave.com has only a single
listing for any Marlin Schweigert of any era having been interred anywhere in the world; and he was interred within Illinois in 1917 and does not have any apparent ties to Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, nor does he have any obvious record of having served in the military. Additionally, an Internet search for any Marlin Schweigert with ties to the Auburn-area failed to produce any results; therefore, no further information is available about this individual at this time. |

Schwenk, Francis David - Private. (see newspaper clipping on right)
The website findagrave.com has a listing of only eleven "Francis Schwenk" interments of any era having been interred anywhere within the United States. Two of this individuals had direct ties to the Auburn-area. However, due to the naming of his wife within the newspaper clipping featured on the right; the correct "Francis Schwenk" was positively identified as having been interred within California. Francis David Schwenk was born on 11/19/1920 in Jefferson, South Manheim Township ("Auburn R.D."), Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of David Oscar Schwenk and Tillie F. Yeich Schwenk. He was a brother of Eva M. Schwenk Witmier; June (E. or Irene?) Schwenk (who lived only twelve days); Robert P. Schwenk (who lived only one year, six months); and Ruth N. Schwenk Grady; and he was a step- brother of Russell Reed. Francis married twice; his wives were Ella May Schaeffer Schwenk Karpinsky and Mary Louise Mummert Schwenk (whom he married in 1950). The website did not provide sufficient information to determine which woman he married first; however, it did not list any children by either union although some children may still survive him. Francis died on 07/30/2007 in Bellflower, Los Angeles County, California; and was interred within the Rose Hills Memorial Park cemetery, Wittier, Los Angeles County, California. |

Smith, Paul "Sonny" J. - Paul has a veteran's medallion inserted
beside his grave marker; but no further information is currently available about his military service. Paul was born on 06/03/1932. He was a son of Paul F. Smith and Bertha V. Metz Smith. He was a brother of Dorothy L. Smith Race; Frederick Smith; Harvey "Butch" W. Smith; James F. Smith; and Robert H. Smith (listed below). Paul married Dawn M. Stoudt Smith. They had a at least one child, Paul E. Smith. Paul died on 06/09/2010 and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Rt. 895, West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Smith, Raymond - The original Auburn Roll of Honor has Raymond
included in its "Roll"; yet does not specify during which, if any, conflict he may have served in the military; and since the "Roll" includes entries for more than one conflict, presently Raymond is listed under this heading of personnel until further information can be obtained. The website findagrave.com has a listing for six "Raymond Smith" interments of any era within Schuylkill County. Three of them are listed as having had military service, but none of those individuals have any obvious ties to the Auburn-area. A fourth listing does not mention any military service but has ties to the Auburn-area. As a result, that individual is listed below under the presumption that any non-conflict military service simply was not mentioned on that particular website. Whether or not this individual is the same one listed on the original Auburn Roll of Honor is presently uncertain. Raymond Charles Smith was born on 06/13/1915 in Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Charles Raymond Smith Sr. and Stella Mabel Fryer Smith. He was a brother of Charles Raymond Smith Jr. and Nora Amanda Smith Webber. Raymond married Helen E. Hoffman Smith. They possibly had a daughter by their union, a Josephine (Smith?) Witman, who is mentioned in Helen's obituary with no indication that Helen had been married to anyone but Raymond. Helen's obituary also mentions that she was "formerly of Auburn" and a member of the St. John's Church in Auburn, even though she was interred beside her husband in Orwigsburg. As a result, it's possible to presume that Raymond also lived in Auburn at some point, but not conclusively. Raymond died on 08/29/1966 in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Zions Red Church cemetery, Orwigsburg, Schuylkill County, PA, sharing a grave marker with his wife and both of his parents. Raymond also has a separate smaller monument which appears to have a military service medallion inserted near it. Whether or not this is the correct Raymond Smith listed on the original Auburn Roll of Honor is uncertain at this time. |
Smith, Robert E. - Fireman First-Class; U.S. Navy.
The website findagrave.com has six "Robert Smith" interments listed within Schuylkill County that might have been that of Robert E. Smith. None of those six appear to have any ties with the Auburn- area; nor do they list military service with the U.S. Navy. As a result, no further information is available at this time. |

Smith Race; Frederick Smith; Harvey "Butch" W. Smith; James F. Smith; and Paul "Sonny" J. Smith (listed above). Robert (Sr.?) married Soccorro Avila Smith. They had the following children: Alfred A. Smith; Betyana A. Smith Gordon; Joe S. Smith; Marie Smith Challenger; Phillip Smith; Robert Smith (Jr.?); Sally A. Smith Johnson; Sandy Smith; and Sofie Smith Frantz. In addition to his military service, Robert (Sr.?) worked as a real estate investor for twenty years. Robert (Sr.?) died on 01/03/2015 at the Schuylkill Medical Center- South Jackson Street, Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Rt. 895, West Bruns- wick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Somers, Howard D. Jr. - Airman Basic; U.S. Air Force.
The website findagrave.com has only six listings for any "Howard Sommers" interment of any era that might match that of Howard D. Somers Jr. as having been interred anywhere within the United States; and none of those six individuals have any apparent ties with Pennsyl- vania, much less with Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. Nor do any of those six listings document any type of military service. As a result, no further information is available about this individual at this time. |

Staller, Jeremiah Albert - Jeremiah appears to have an unidentified
military medallion adjacent to his grave marker. Jeremiah was born on 11/28/1878 in Bethel, Berks County, PA. He was a son of William Henry Staller (Sr.?) and Emmalina A. Long Staller. He was a brother of Irvin Clinton Staller; James Washington Staller and William Henry Staller (Jr.?) (who died during the Spanish Flu pandemic which was prevalent in Auburn and elsewhere at that time). Jeremiah married Sadie A. Dewald Staller. They had the following children: Allen Jackson Staller; Helen Ida Staller Heinly; Leroy Abra- ham Staller; Nora A. Staller (who lived only twenty-eight days); Ray- mond Arthur Staller; and an unnamed infant daughter and an unnamed infant son whose dates of birth and dates of death are not recorded and who share a common grave marker, possibly twins, possibly stillborn. Jeremiah died on 09/12/1952 in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the St. John's Church cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Steele, Henry B. - Henry was born on 02/17/1917.
Henry married Eleanor G. Nye Steele. They had a child: James E. Steele. Henry died on 04/14/1992 and was interred within the Schuylkill Memorial Park cemetery, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |

213th Artillery Brigade; National Guard; served from 11/21/1955 until 11/20/1959. Gilbert was born on 07/11/1937. He was a son of William H. Steffy (Jr.?) and Bertha C. Barr Steffy. He was a brother of Clifford "Barney" William Steffy; Kenneth "Jim" G. Steffy; and Stewart "Tink" Wayne Steffy (who also served in World War Two - see listing below). Gilbert married Nancy Steffy. Steffy, William Henry (Sr.?) - A notation on the findagrave.com
website states that William "registered for military service" in 1894. To what extent William's military service included is uncertain at this time. The website findagrave.com contains a listing for three separate William H. Steffy's interred within the immediate Auburn area, but based on dates of birth and death, the following entry seems to be the most likely match for this potential veteran. William H. Steffy (Sr.?) was born in Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, on 02/01/1877. He was the son of Samuel Steffey and Louise Miller Steffey. He was a brother of Anna Steffey Killian and Catherine Steffey Killian. In 1898, William (Sr.?) married Carrie B. Swoyer Steffy. He was a father of Alverna Steffy, an unnamed infant son (1903), Irene May Steffey, Leona Josephine Steffey, Roscoe Steffy, Samuel Kenneth Steffy, and William H. Steffy (Jr.?) (1901-1955). The earlier William H. Steffy (Sr.?) died in Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA, on 12/27/1958 and was interred within the Auburn Public Cemetery, Mill Street, Auburn, PA. Two undated and non-sourced news articles found within the Auburn Area Historical Society archives pertain to a William Steffe (or a William Steffy) of Auburn, PA. Whether these articles pertain to the earlier William H. Steffy (born 1877), the latter William H. Steffy (born 1901) or even a third previously unidentified William is uncertain at this time. If they do pertain to the same individual known as "Sweet William" Steffy, then a possible explanation for his nickname might have been the moniker was a sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek label for someone with an obviously violent temper. ******************************************************************** Steffe, William* - "CRIMINAL CASE SETTLED. - The case in which Wm. Steffe, of Auburn, was charged with assault and battery by his wife, was settled yesterday upon payment of the costs." - Excerpt from an undated and unidentified news article source. ******************************************************************** Steffy, William* - AUBURN SHALE: "Mrs. Wm. Steffy, living on Bear Creek street, has entered suit against her husband, who last Tuesday beat her most brutally, so that at one time it was feared that the one eye was destroyed. Steffy was waited upon by Capt. Reppard (Reppert) and in default of bail, he was given transportation to the castle on the hill (Pottsville's jailhouse), in Pottsville. Mrs. Steffy is under the doctor's care." - Excerpt from an undated and unidentified news article source. ******************************************************************** *NOTE: While it is uncertain whether William Steffe & William Steffy are the same individual, the type of events detailed in the articles suggest the likelihood of this offender being the same person is highly probable. |
Stoyer, Milton E. - Private; U.S. Army. The original Auburn Roll of
Honor has Milton included in its "Roll"; yet does not specify during which, if any, conflict he may have served in the military; and since the "Roll" includes entries for more than one conflict, presently Milton is listed under this heading of personnel until further information can be obtained. Milton was born on 08/13/1911 in Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of James N. Stoyer and Adelina Seigfried Stoyer. He was a brother of Bertha May Stoyer Wildermuth; Clinton O. Stoyer (who only lived approximately one year, one month); Eva A. Stoyer Moyer; Foster Oscar Stoyer; and Walter W. Stoyer. Milton married Lydia C. Somers Stoyer. Milton died on 03/11/2006 in Daytona Beach, Volusia County, Florida, and was interred within the Schuylkill Memorial Park cemetery, North Manheim Township, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Straub, Walter F. - Walter was born circa 1923 and died circa 1995.

Walton, Donald - The original Auburn Roll of Honor has Donald
included in its "Roll"; yet does not specify during which, if any, conflict he may have served in the military; and since the "Roll" includes en- tries for more than one conflict, presently Donald is listed under this heading of personnel until further information can be obtained. The website findagrave.com has no listing for any "Donald Walton" of any era having been interred anywhere within Schuylkill County. The same website does have sixteen potential listings of "Donald Walton" interments within Pennsylvania. A single one of those listings can be disregarded as that individual died at three years of age. Out of the remaining fifteen entries, none of them list any obvious ties to Schuyl- kill County, much less the immediate "Auburn-are"; and five of them list some form of military service, so it is uncertain which, if any, of these listings are for the individual who was posted on the original Auburn Roll of Honor veterans' memorial. As a result, no further information on that individual is available at this time. |

Washington, Timothy E. - Lieutenant; U.S. Navy.
The website findagrave.com has only three potential listings for any "Timothy E. Washington" of any era having been interred anywhere in the world; none of those listings have any obvious ties to the state of Pennsylvania, much less to the immediate "Auburn-area", and two of the listings imply military service, but one of those has a designation of having only achieved the rank of Corporal; while the other listing has no military service details or even personal details such as date of birth or date of death, simply a notation that they were interred on 09/25/2023 in the Fort Logan National Cemetery; Denver, Denver County, Colorado . As a result, no further information is available about this veteran at this time. |

Weaver, R. - Petty Officer Third-Class; U.S. Navy.
The website findagrave.com has a listing for fifteen "R. Weaver" inter- ments of any era having been located within Schuylkill County, PA. Out of those fifteen, one individual died too young to have been in the military. Out of the remaining fourteen (both genders were checked), none of them had any obvious ties to the immediate "Auburn-area"; and only two of them had any military service listed. One of those two individuals served in the Army Infantry and could be discounted; the other actually served in the U.S. Navy...but he only lived from 1837 until 1875 and the rank of "Petty Officer" wasn't established by the Navy until 1885...ten years after that individual's death. As a result, no further information is available about Petty Officer Third-Class (U.S. Navy) "R. Weaver" at this time. |

Weidner, Reynold Samuel - Reynold was born on 09/14/1920. He was
a son of Samuel Weidner and Estella Reed Weidner. He was a brother of Evelyn May Weidner and Katherine Estella Weidner. Reynold died circa 09/1973 and was interred within the St. John's Reformed Church cemetery, Friedensburg, Schuylkill County, PA. |
Werner, John - John has an unidentifiable veterans medallion in-
serted next to his grave marker on the website findagrave.com; as a result, his military service is uncertain at this time, and whether or not he participated in any military conflict is uncertain at this time; if he did serve in a conflict; it would have had to have been either the Mexican-American War at during his mid-teen years; or more likely, the Civil War when he was in his late twenties to early thirties. John was born on 08/03/1833 in Germany. At some point, John emigrated to America and married Catharine Mengel Werner of West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA. John and Catharine had the following children: Annie Wanner (tombstone) or Warner (death certificate) or Werner (childhood and parents' surname); Jeremiah Werner; Louis Werner; Mary A. Werner Moyer and William Werner. John and Catharine's marriage wasn't without its difficulties, as is evident by a newspaper advertisement John submitted concerning his wife in the Miners' Journal (newspaper) on July 16, 1864, Page 2: "NOTICE.—Whereas, My wife, Catharine (Mengel), has left my bed and board without just cause, (for the third time,) I hereby, caution all persons from harboring or trusting her on my account, as I will pay no debts that she Contracts. - JOHN WERNER West Brunswick Tp., Schuylkill Co., July 16, '64." Apparently John and Catharine reconciled their differences, because not only did Catharine already have a four year old daughter and a four month old son by John at that point, but she returned and bore three more children with John over the next nine years. John obvious- ly was a fairly forgiving individual to reunite with a woman who had deliberately left him three times in the past. John died on 01/10/1903 in West Brunswick Township, Schuylkill County, PA, and was interred within the Auburn Church of God cemetery, Cemetery Road, Auburn, Schuylkill County, PA, beside his "wandering" wife. |

Zimmerman, Robert M. Sr. - Robert was born on 02/13/1926 in Potts-
ville, Schuylkill County, PA. He was a son of Miles Dewey Zimmerman and Leah Messersmith Zimmerman. Presumably, Robert Sr. was married as his grave marker is inscribed with the word "HUSBAND". Robert also presumably had at least one child since he himself is a "Sr."; his child would have been Robert M. Zimmerman Jr. Robert Sr. died on 07/07/1994 in South Manheim Township, Schuyl- kill County, PA, and was interred within the Charles Baber Cemetery, Pottsville, Schuylkill County, PA. |
