Updated 08/08/2023
The Iraq War, also known as the "Second Gulf War" or "Operation Iraqi Freedom" was an armed conflict which began in 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by a U.S. led coalition that overthrew Saddam Hussein's government. The conflict continued for years as an insurgency emerged to oppose the newly installed government as well as the occupying forces. U.S. troops were officially withdrawn in 2011, but the U.S. chose to redeploy U.S. forces to Iraq in 2014 to continue fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (I.S.I.L.).
