During the Lebanese Civil War, a multinational force including 800 U.S. Marines landed in Beirut in 1982 to oversee the Palestinian withdrawal from Lebanon. It was the beginning of a problem-plagued mission that would stretch into 17 months and leave 262 U.S. servicemen dead. On February 7, 1984, President Ronald Regan announced the end of the United States participation in the peacekeeping force. No Auburn-area affiliated veterans are known to have participated in this conflict.
