Afghanistan
(a.k.a. - "Afghan War")
October 7, 2001 - August 30, 2021
(approximate time frame for "American" involvement in the conflict)
Updated 08/08/2023
The United States involvement in the Afghanistan War began in 2001 and was code named Operation Enduring Freedom. The catalyst for the United States involvement was the September 11th terrorists attacks within the United States. The initial objective was to remove the Taliban from power in order to deny al-Qaeda its base of operations within that country.
Once the initial phase was completed, the second portion of the military action, code named Operation Freedom's Sentinel, began in 2015. The purpose of that phase is to battle Taliban insurgency within the country. The war in Afghanistan is the longest war or military action in United States history. |
